Did it? I thought it ended up being just another cryptocurrency that got hyped up and died just as quickly. Maybe it caused a week or two of HDD shortages, but I don't remember it having a significant effect.

there's no algo that's based mainly on RAM afaik

but RAM speed/capacity matters for few algo, namely Chia mining and Monero mining (XMRig), but those arent really too profitable/popular atm

Don't go mining chia on your dads old SSD or whatever.

It's only profitable to people who can afford hundreds, thousands of drives and afford to replace them very often. Not just one guy with a couple drives.

Well I'm sitting here with 35 16 GB ddr3 ram that is pretty much not used and with more coming in (no cost at all).

Why the hell do you have so much ram?

Sell it as a lot on ebay and get like $500 for it. Even if RAM could mine, you'd need a huge workstation/server board to fit all that.

I wonder, what would happen if you used many of the ram to pcie things, if they existed for DDR3, run like 4 of them in raid.

For monero, speed of CPU matters, so you need ryzen 3000/5000 series (for the efficiency)

Having high bandwidth low latency RAM can increase the performance by a bit more, but it's mainly the CPU

But I'd suggest you look elsewhere, my 3900x is only making about 60 cents a day, before electricity, which after subtracting will bring it to about 40 cents a day

 

For chia, you want capacity and speed, about 100gb+ to make a RAM disk to create plots, then move the plots to HDD, you'll want several petabytes to even have a decent chance at getting a coin, I'm not sure if there are pools for mining chia though, maybe that's a route you can explore

 

Long story short, you can't do much with just RAM sticks except selling them
