MSI 980 GAMING teardown video/guide

kucharczykt

I want to replace the thermal paste on my 980 but I've never done anything like this before so I would like some sort of tutorial that I can follow but I can't seem to find anything about my card specificly. If there's not a guide for my specific card general gpu disassembly tips are appreciated too.

Gamers Nexus has at least a couple Video Card teardown guides, and at least one specifically for the 900 series.

Looks like a pretty straightforward cooler

4 screws in the center and the Heatsink comes off, replace the paste

then the remaining screws on the back take off the memory Heatsink to replace those pads

i wouldn’t bother with the pads unless the memory is running noticeably hot. Further I also wouldn’t use that Heatsink if you were going to replace the thermal pads because using some memory heatsinks and thermal adhesive would probably do more for actual memory cooling considering the main Heatsink doesn’t attach to the memory at all

Make sure you put the right screws back in each hole. Just match up the layout of screws to the layout of the PCB on the board and you'll be fine 🙂

Yeah but those are mostly for reference cards witch use a different cooling and mounting system.
