Some chinese iPad mini 6 buyer report strange “rolling shutter" effect with the dispaly.

Some apple user in Bilibili report there new iPad mini 6 tablet display have some noticable "rolling shutter" effect when they are try to using the device vertically.

Some old iPad mini 5 user saying they alread have same kind of problome before only horizontally, and same kind of problome also appear in first gen Galaxy fold. (I reminber Linus or MKBHD mention in their review.)

 

Very un Apple mistake, hope they can fix it down the line...

There are other reports on Reddit too. It's not just an isolated occurrence. It's not an acceptable. I'd return mine if I'd bought one and discovered that the 60Hz display had tearing.

I'm going to need an ELI5 on how this even happens. I've seen it on a number different devices from all kinds of manufacturers and screen sizes. The jello effect i would say is more distracting than any other screen "issue" (like ghosting)

Didn't this happened with early batches of M1 macbooks too?

Interesting, side note almost all the OLED screens apple has develop terrible purple ghosting in a couple years or less at lower brightnesses

I haven’t tried a game on mine yet but you basically have to make it happen for it to be noticeable for instance when reading...

From what I've seen it looks a little bit like vertical tearing. Think when playing a game with Vsync turned off, but the screen is rotated 90 degrees so the tear lines are up and down instead of side to side.

It's interesting that people are reporting it's most noticeable when the device is in portrait mode and not in landscape mode. Most sites and apps are designed in a vertical layout so scrolling up and down is more common. Think how often you see the scroll bar on the right of your browser to scroll up and down but how rarely you see the scroll bar at the bottom of the browser window to scroll left and right through a page. Perhaps that side to side movement (relative to the direction the screen is updating) is more susceptible to tearing? I wonder if the issue would also be present/noticeable when the tablet is used in landscape mode if scrolling left and right quickly.

 

This makes me wonder if Apple could fix it just by implementing Vsync or some other way to ensure each displays refresh cycle finishes before sending the next frame. I actually have no idea if Apple uses any sort of Vsync. It might not even be anything to do with tearing. 🤷‍♂️

it is, just in a different way, but still scrolling up and down (relative to the screen rotation)

 

vertical: one side lags behind the other

horizontal: the image "squishes" down then stretches back out when scrolling stops. (think like compressing a spring)

 

it used to happen on my old cheap android tablet

Based on Ifixit's Take on this, I don't think its an easy fix, devices have had this 'rolling shutter' effects for years, but they design them so its less noticeable.

For example laptop monitors like mine has higher refresh for the top row of pixels horizontally, so only scrolling while the display is rotated to vertical arrangement would show this rolling effect. Hardly any one would do that and as such notice. They did point out as well, the iPad Air has the display in a different configuration to make the rolling effect only in horizontal mode, which is less used for scrolling. 

I do think its just a design over look and they will probably not do anything. It  is unfortunate though with all the excess space in the body of the iPad they could have fixed it and made this model a huge seller. 

Their tool linked is very helpful to see this effect. The lines are all straight, but once the rolling occurs the lines become tilted similar to rolling shutter effect on Cameras when filming moving past vertical posts. (the tool is in the description of the video)
