Swapping History with Computer Science (Here me out)

Krocket

Me being able to speak French lets me take my job from one country to...several. Now add in Spanish and Italian. Might as well learn Portuguese since I already have the rest of the gang. My value to a employer just skyrocketed, since I can go in more places and be effective. Because in my field, knowing computing science means nothing. Last I checked, Docs don't write C++. Why would I? Its an inherently useless skill to have.

Knowing languages is inherently more useful for EVERYONE. Knowing code is only useful for those going into that field.

Okay just one last thing then. Knowing Spanish, French, etc. is useless to me but coding is not. This is where having more freedom to choose what is necessary for you would be nice. Having to take 2 years of mandatory spanish was just a waste of my time the same way code would be for you. It's all dependant on your hobbies, your ambitions, and how you view life. Perhaps it's my fucked up views on life that make me think history isn't important. The world too full of diverse people to label what's important and what's not. If I had it my way I would have dropped everything but math and computer science the second I could read.

History is not about memorizing dates. It's pathetic that it's looked at that way.

It certainly isn't and I WISH that memorizing dates wouldn't be the premise of teaching in schools, but it usually is. I would love to learn about events without cramming dozens of specific dates that ruin it all, but it doesn't work out that way unfortunately.

I'm not saying we don't need history. I'm not saying we get rid of it from schools. I'm saying it should be an elective and that Computer Science (typing, basic OS usage, browser maintenance, computer maintenance, virus protection, backing up, basic code, binary, hardware, etc. etc. etc.; hell anything related to computers) should be made a core subject. People don't even know how to use computers or type in this day and age, let alone know how they work. I didn't even start understanding how the basics of a  computer work until Freshman year and that was with research on my own time, and plenty of it. If you like learning about George Washington then go ahead and sign up for the elective course, but today knowing how to properly use a computer is CRUCIAL. And barely any people seem to have the skill. Maybe it's regional and maybe something like this exists in other countries but I personally feel the simplest things aren't even being taught. What's so hard about teaching toddlers binary and hex along with numbers, and Java, HTML, and C++ next to English? Definitely a lot more important than knowing about the 1400s (opinion), unless you want to know about the 1400s.

I know some will think this is stupid but think about where the world is heading. We wouldn't be forgetting the history of our world. It would just be an option if you wanted to learn it.

This is not my biased hate on History and love for Computer Science. This is a legitimate thought of mine.

Time for some profiling. My goodness we have a MAD SCIENTIST on our hands here. Ok granted only boring people like History or if you plan on showing anyone first hand what Encephalitis lethargica or Trypanosomiasis is like without really getting it.

You do not teach toddlers binary and hex and all the other things you said as they are still learning right from wrong, which is not to say that some of you BIG HORSES know right from wrong but you sill have to give them the chance and also let them make the choice of is they want to go into the depths of IT.

Lost track of where i was going with this...hunger has set in and i am going to put some gas in my engine.

I disagree, frankly we don't need everyone to be programmers-  means that there will be no jobs for programmers out there

Everyone has their own little areas of interests, some people do medicine, some do law, some do sports, some study geography computers are not for everyone.

Now most learning places have some form of basic IT classes, frankly I think this is all that is needed for 99% of people to get buy, creating documents, understanding the difference between a monitor and a tower and how to navigate basic computers - unless you want to specialise in tech there is no reason to know any more

And here i am.. Studying to become a history teacher...

History should stay where it's at right now.

Computer science should be an optional addition to your school curriculum though.
