Should I just liquid cool my 5900X?

FED

Hello, I recently purchased a 5900X with a B550 Aorus Pro AC, I'm currently cooling it with an Arctic Freezer 34 with 2 fans and I've pasted it with a new tube of Kryonaut for good measure, my case is a Define R4 with the 2 stock 120mm fans pulling air from the front, and an added 140mm fan in the back pushing it out. CPU Idles at 29-33 Celsius, sometimes spikes to 50-60 degrees for 5-10 seconds before the cooler wrangles it back to 40 and under.
In gaming, it just touches the 80 degree mark for a second and the cooler pulls it right back to high 60s, I haven't run heavy benches but I'm just gonna assume the same kind of behaviour but 10 degrees higher than gaming. I haven't touched anything in bios other than enabling XMP with 4x8gb Kingston 3000mhz memory. This CPU has some wild temp spikes, which I've read is normal. For the time being I'm satisfied with it, however, I like my setup cool and quiet so I was wondering if the Noctua's higher end D-15 cooler or some AIO would be a worthwhile investment in the future.

i mean thats fine but if you want to oc or just uncomfortable with the temps then an nh-d15 will do all that and is pretty quiet

I used to tell myself I'd dabble in it, but honestly I never do. I'm just wondering if the D-15 or an AIO makes a difference worth the trouble.
PS: I'm asking mostly cause I can't seem to find any tests specifically for the D-15 on a 5900X

A 240mm rad and a D15 shoudln't have that big of a difference. 240mm saves a bit of space and may have RGB while the D15 has fewer points of failure. There isn't really a noticable performance difference.

the big difference is if a cpu draws more than 250w a 360mm would prob be a noticable difference

Tbh if your cooler isnt noisy and the cpu doesnt go over 80c its fine and you dont really need to do an upgrade

If you do want a cooler upgrade maybe go for a cheap dual tower like the fuma 2 or phantom, might improve temps abit since more heatpipes and 2 towers, d15 is prob overkill, 240mm has bad value and itll be a useless brick if the pump fails and the pump cant even be replaced

That cooler is junk and 80 is high just playing a game.

Does not sound that bad considering the case. Wouldnt be surprised if swapping to a nice airflow case would give larger improvements than d15 or 240 aio.

Given that the temps shortly drop back down to the 60s, I'd guess the issue is that the fans aren't reacting fast enough. My BIOS has an option for how fast they react to temperature changes. I believe I set mine for once a second. It might be that they're only set to react every 3 seconds or so. That's still not a big deal - hitting 80C for a second or two won't hurt it.

You are absolutely right! But that is still pretty warm for just playing a game. The cooler is decent but on a 12 core part, it wouldn’t be my first choice. Looking at my post it sounds pretty harsh lol.. that’s not how I meant to come off.

It's alright, it's a pretty cheap cooler, my Skylake 6600K ran ice cold on it, but I'll definitelly invest in a NH-D15, or some other dual tower, I don't like the CPU touching 80 degrees either, even though people will swear up and down that it's within spec. Coming from skylake gives you high standards for what acceptable temperatures are lol.

Its low temps if he has a card like 3080/3090 heating up the case.

No that just means he has to work on his case flow. My card puts out 300w+ too, and my four case fans flow front to rear. I don’t see 80c on the cpu when playing a game. 80c think about that for a second. 10c more until he hits throttle point, if it even throttles.. just from just playing a game. That is pretty intense. Those are the kinds of temps I see when running Linpack Xtreme.. and guys are ok with that? I’m not one of those guys who thinks it’s ok, but it’s not my rig either.

Not really, I have a 1070ti , but I did check the case today again, turns out I forgot the fan header for the front fans, lol. Doesn't go above 75 now, mostly stays in the high 60s. Still, I'm pretty convinced that I should swap this cooler for a dual tower one.

I'd go for the d-15 cooler. AIO is also not a bad option, because the 5900X runs very hot and my 5950X will have spikes from time to time as well, but I have my clock pegged to 5.0GHz on all cores when the spikes happen

5900X doesn’t run hot though. It’s like an old i7, just a little more sensitive.

The Define R4 isn't that bad for airflow right? I'd really hate to have to swap it out.

I have one in white, it houses my sons system these days 😄

I ran mine with 120x38s, it’s not the best case for airflow, but you can do worse.

Swap if you feel like swapping. I think you could improve temps by just moving the back fan of that cooler to bottom or side intake. Those Fractal fans are what I call idiot proof and wont much air even at 100% speed because someone might call those loud if air was moved. You should also remove the top hdd compartment if you dont need it as that obstructs airflow too. Swapping the cooler alone wont do much if the air inside the case is still over 40C.

80c is fine and nothing to worry about.

Is the system too noisy?

Sitting at 75*C, and PBO2 boosting the cores as high as possible is fine.

You can get a 280mm / 360mm AIO if you want, and you can drop the temperatures down a little bit, while keeping the fan RPMs low.

Temperatures, how it stands now is pretty good, IMO.

I'm not running a Ryzen 5900X, but a 5800X + B550 Aorus Pro AC, paired with an Ekwb 360mm AIO.

Personally went with that specific AIO due to the mounting method (4x screw X-pattern), and according to Gamers' Nexus' review, really good CPU block contact.
