Coolers and CPUs? Confused

AMD Wraith MAX CPU Cooler with RGB LED TDP 140watts

 AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12-core, 24-Thread Unlocked Desktop Processor is 105watts

 

Seems to me the cooler can handle the CPU, what do they actually measure this by?

TDP is a nebulous metric and changes depending who's measuring it and how.

 

Suffice to say that while it will work, the 5900x won't boost as high or for as long on the Prism vs a higher end cooler.

Would the wraith max even fit in there?

 

I've got a prism which is the same I think, and I don't think it would fit in that mini it's case.

 

It will he even worse in a small form factor case, though.

I am still not sure where they got that number from. I have seen it do 200w ppt on its own with PBO and CO, and I have seen it do 240w ppt with some guidance from me. I have seen it take 65w at the wall doing nothing, and I have seen it take 300w from the wall without the GPU working. Not really sure where they get their numbers from..

Unfortunately no, the max height of a cooler that fits in there is 58mm while wraith prism around 100 ish mm

So the TDP thing is BS, be cool if companies would be clear on things like this. Not just throw out a number.

Eh, it's been a thing for a while and they all do it.

 

Best to just research reviews specifically on each cooling unit vs CPU.

When overclocking it obviously won't follow the TDP, even if the number isn't accurate, as long you have the CPU at stock Ryzen 5000 will draw ~140W or ~85W maximum depending on the CPU.

I have undevolted and power limited my 3080 because I've got too many things on the same circuit in my den that I can't relocate.........need to move the damned laser printer off the circuit. It pulls 400w when it ramps up lol

That so true. Intel is no better. My 11700f is a 65 watt part and I've seen it hit 200 watts

No cpu mobo or ram atm

We need a petition to have TDP make sense, I have no idea how to do these things though. It is odd they made it so confusing anyway.

I always say get the best cooler you can afford. I like Thermalright, other guys like Noctua, some other folks like Scythe, and there is that big group over there that does not care and will just slap whatever on, and maybe wonder why their shit runs hot or over heats. To avoid running a program because it will make your CPU over heat is silly, just buy a good cooler and be done with it. If you decide you want to dabble with overclocking, you will be happy you invested in the extra headroom.

They're also quite customizable generally speaking and can add a lot of visual flair to your system.

My favorite of recent memory are the Cryorig H7 Quad Lumis. Still got 2x of them in some of my systems.
