I mean there is hardly anyone who doesn't love watching movies. The kind of movies people like may differ. The situation indicates the fact that there a huge lack of awareness amongst the general public. Someone who has power should come forward and do something. Bluray discs are expensive so not everyone can afford them. Popular streaming services like Amazon Prime, Netflix and even Youtube must at least consider increasing their bitrate to an acceptable value.

Using only Linux since 2007. Not a single MS Windows or Mac client at home.

It's a competitive market space, so the quality of the product (streaming video) is determined by market forces. In this case, the individual companies are balancing the costs of increased quality with revenue, and viewer retention. They will increase their quality to the extent that they need to in order to retain a viewership relative to their competitors that allows them to be maximally profitable. Those who want better quality can spend more money for the privilege in the form of Bluray.

Until the masses start demanding higher quality content, this is the way things will remain. And since most people give zero fucks, I don't see this changing any time soon.

Compressed shit?  You're the one watching on a 720p monitor.  Not sure if you've ever seen 4k streamed on a 70"+ 4K TV but it's slightly better than your 1080p on a 720p screen.

You want companies to spend billions to have a pipeline that can deliver uncompressed raw footage yet you want it on...  nm 😉

I wonder why doesn't some new streaming service appear whose USP is higher quality video. I mean "If you buy our subscription you will enjoy movies in high quality". Is that not attractive ?

I am dissapointed to hear that. I was planning to take an Amazon Prime subscription hoping for high quality videos. Where I live there are no bluray renting services available.

compressed and high quality does not exclude one another.
afaik Amazon does have the highest bitrates, which is what you want. Giving the best picture quality.

But if you want uncompressed you better have several gigabit internet hahaha, Specialy anyhting above 1080p.......

And for the most part video's looking better is because of the bitrate.
Why i watch 4K on my 1080p monitor. Everything is way sharper. Pauzing the video also results in way better looking picture.

They are only interested in those marketing things like 4K , HDR and DOLBY.

Yep. Marketing has sold the general public that resolution is king. However, Streaming companies want to be able to say "we  have 4k" but also deliver service to as many people as possible. Given that internet packages in the west can range from 10mbps to several gbps, they just compress the fuck out of it so that the experience is mostly the same for everyone.

It COULD get better though. As technology improves, compression routines and techniques do get better allowing for higher compressed videos that don't los as much data in the compression. H264 is the standard now, but H265 is promising for a lot of content as it can compress even further.

Plus as more high speed internet becomes available, it's possible t hat these services eventually start offering higher bitrate offerings, like we've seen now with a few of the music streaming services.

Yes I have seen 4K on large screens. The electronics shops put those on display to attract buyer but they use Bluray. The average customer sees it & says wow without knowing that he will never see that kind of picture quality under any streaming service.

Companies will spend billions if they see an opportunity for profit.

The technology already exists. I mean higher bitrate videos exist it just that no one wants will want to invest unless some competitor does it first. If there is even one new streaming service launched all the rest will follow. These people are quite predictable. All they think of is money.

Yup just to bad talk about piracy is illegal.

Complete agree. Please understand that all I am asking for right now is if I select 720p resolution which the max of my TV I must be able to enjoy 720p at its fullest. Why that's not happening ? Why I have to waste bandwidth streaming 1080p content on a 720p TV ? Ans: Low Bitrate.

You don't see consumers abusing anything they possibly can?  From rationalized shoplifting, pirating, all the way to social systems.

Do you honestly believe that HUMAN BEINGS are infallible, when they're on both sides of the coin?  So when a person is a consumer at night, they're perfect, but then they go to work the next day for one of these companies all that switches and they want to screw everyone?

You want from making good points to a rabid fanatic.  Way to just fly off into the extreme.  You're right, what do you know?  Might be a lot, but it's clouded by your closed mind.

As a people we are awful and what runs companies? Those same people. But those are indeed the same that also buy stuff.

So yeah i have to concede with some of your points, i did went a bit far, maybe.
But my mind is surely not closed. 🙂

When i ask for more specs, don't expect me to know the answer!
I'm just helping YOU to help YOURSELF!
(The more info you give the easier it is for others to help you out!)

Not willing to capitulate to the ignorance of the masses!

These are both true. But the power dynamic is such that large companies have more power, and so it is they and their rich executives, who need to be kept in check more so than the average person.

I saw a report earlier that the McDonalds CEO made something like 1200 times more than the median worker, not even the lowest worker, but the median worker. Some would argue that the CEO deserves and earns that pay. But I find that to be incredulous. Does the CEO really do as much work in 24 seconds as the median staff does in a full 8 hour shift? Does he do as much work in 1 hour and 45 minutes as the median worker does in an entire year of full-time work? I think not...

But this is all woefully off-topic....
