Reasonable upgrade from a 6600k?

Been running a i5-6600k for over 5 years now and it's starting to show its age, is there another chip that anyone would recommend that works for the same motherboard? I'd consider going ryzen but I thought I'd save that for when I just rebuild a new PC entirely. It's been used primarily for gaming and it's running 100% or near that on games like Apex Legends, games that aren't particularly demanding.

7700k Is not really worth buying imho if it costs more then  130$. If you want a decent upgrade, you will need a new mobo and cpu

Yeah i figured as much, just thought I'd ask if there is anything that would have gone down in price that's still considered decent these days

You're limited to the 6700/7700 chips. Nothing else will fit. They're equivalent to a modern i3.

I'd just look at getting a newer CPU and motherboard combo, scrapping the old one.

fwiw I have a 7700k, my r5 3600 has better per core performance, and of course more cores. So unless you're planning to wait for ddr5 I think getting a 5600x might just be a better plan

That's exactly what I intended to get when I rebuilt the entire thing, was just looking for a temporary measure as supply and price return to normal
