Will.i.am claims he developed a smartwatch that will launch in July

"I started the company myself," he said before apparently tapping at a wrist-mounted touchscreen. "I funded it, used my own money to develop it." says  Will.i.am.

He claims that his smartwatch doesn't need to be connected to a smartphone - it can apparently stream stored music via Bluetooth and make calls all on its lonesome. He also mentions it can access Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

I can't wait for Jay-Z to do an even more overpriced knockoff of it.

Although these might not revolutionize smartwatches in a tech community or in terms of software/hardware, they might break down walls of social response to smartwatches.

Will I be getting one? not likely, but if this gets smartwatches to be a more mainstream product rather than bring the "IT guy's dorky watch" then I don't think it's a bad thing.

edit: just watch this video, and tell me that smartwatches don't need better PR.

I don't want them to become mainstream, at least not in this way. Before you know it every 14 year old will have one and be bragging about it like BEATS and their iphones.

Well as much as I dislike beats headphones, they've made spending +$200 and $300 on a pair of headphones not insane in the minds of many. They didn't stop Sennheiser and other brands from producing great audiophile products at those prices though.

This smartwatch won't replace more tech oriented and functionality-first smartwatches like beats and other looks-first-audio-second headphones don't replace audiophile products, it just opens up people's response to these accessories. I for one, as embarrassed as I am about it, must say I only found high quality audio because I learned about beats and wondered why would anyone pay that much for headphones.

You don't have to buy beats or iPhones if you don't want, but both (iPhone more so) have, if nothing else, helped push ideas into the mainstream.

I guess I just look at it differently because of the number of people I see give someone shit for not have beats or having an Android phone over an Iphone etc, I get sick of listening to it and I just don't want another cool useful tech item to become bragging accessory or  swag status symbol.

I'm not really looking forward for "swag smartwatches" either, I just want smartwatches not to be the crocs of wearable tech.

lol.

Then again I'm not sure why I so worried half the people that would turn them into swag items cant figure out how to operate their phones anyway let alone a smartwatch.

Just so people know, Will.I.Am is actually pretty heavily invested in the technology scene. If I remember correctly, he is a big voice for a program that teaches technology and innovation to kids.

The watch looks bulky and uncomfortable, but don't knock it just because of the person showing it.
