What is wrong with my Internet?

lerodemmy

I just had Spectrum's 400 Mbps service installed yesterday.  I tested it (wired) by downloading a PS5 game and it was consistently around 50 MB/s.  I was pleased with that.

Now, I'm using my PC on Wi-Fi, about 10 feet from the router.  I'm trying to download a Steam game.  The download starts off around 40 MB/s and then gradually decreases for the next few moments, until it eventually hovers in the 10 MB/s range.

This is infuriating.

No real way to tell with the information we have, the speed at which you download a game from steam is 50% on you, 50% on the capacity to serve you data from Steams CDN. Many factors involved here that are outside of your control. Time of day being a big one.

Pretty simple test is wire up your PC and see if you see an improvement. Doing this back to back few times should clearly show what the problem is. If it's the same on both, the issue is on Steams end for that particular title.

Some geographical areas might just not have that particular title in a CDN location that's close to you so its streaming from further away.

End of the day though, wifi, imo, is for phones, tablets and non-mission critical laptops. Wire up your PC.

You already have wired connection going through your ps5

Any reason you not also hard wired your pc that's only 10 feet?

The PC downloads Steam game at a steady 50+ MB/s when wired.  Does that mean there’s something wrong with the WiFi?  Unfortunately, I can’t keep it wired.

I just don’t know what’s going on.  I can get over slow downloads of Steam games, but now I’m having another issue.

I’m trying to play Star Wars Battlefront 2 on PC and I’m teleporting all over the place.  Wired and WiFi.  The in-game ping says 16.  I’m not having this issue on a PS5 that’s very close to the PC.

Yeah, WiFi is not Ethernet. WiFi does not have the same guarantees when it comes to performance.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
