can Quantum dots replace hdr ?

Pedro1100

Hi guys I'm planning to buy Samsung 34" CJ791 which is an Ultra-wide 1440 × 3440 and 100hz QLED curved monitor(I have RTX 3060 ti so no problem at gaming in this res). Is Quantum Dot technology good enough for gaming to forget the fact that it doesn't have HDR ? (I know they're two different things I am just asking if it can do as good as a normal hdr400 display for gaming) btw if you have a better suggestion for an ultra-wide monitor please tell me. thanks.

As far as I know quantum dots is simply a technology that makes it possible to reproduce more colors more accurately (a wider color gamut or whatever it's called), by improving the backlight quality. It has nothing to do with backlight brightness.

HDR is high dynamic range and it's all about how bright whites can be, how dark blacks can be, better hdr requires the backlight to have local dimming (but I think hdr400 doesn't require local dimming)

I'll let others recommend a monitor for you...

Yup.

Quantum Dot, or QLED, won't replace HDR. You have have HDR displays that don't use Quantum Dot, and then you can have HDR displays, that uses Quantum Dot - fx Samsungs displays.

qdot and hdr are 2 different things. I wouldn't get that monitor over the g7 unless you need the thunderbolt ports (even then it's a very steep premium you are paying for the ports, the other specs of the 34cj791 is very outdated.

If you want good HDR on PC, you will have to buy VERY high end monitors that cost a lot.

Most ok-ish HDR displays on PC can display high brightness but most have really, really bad black levels, because most don't use FALD. Some monitors do use FALD but they very expensive.

If you're okay with paying a premium for HDR, do yourself a favor and wait for Samsungs next PC monitor series that uses mini-LED.
