Is the LG 38GN95B-B a competitive ultra-wide for the price?

bennybroseph

Basically the title. I'm considering getting an ultra-wide monitor to replace my current standard 16:9 one and I'm wondering if it's a good deal for the price it's at. I tried the SAMSUNG 49-inch Odyssey G9 but found it honestly a little short, so hoping this is a little taller even though it's not as wide.

Few other questions as well.

  • Many ultra-wide and super ultra-wides go for 1440 while this is 1600. Is that an odd resolution? The last thing I want is to not be able to run most things in native or at least 16:9 with only horizonal bars.
  • Monitors like this state it is G-Sync "Compatible". What is the disadvantage over native support?
  • How do you overclock a monitor? This one claims 160hz on overclock.
  • I definitely plan on using a VESA for this. Any recommendation?
  • If you have an ultra-wide, how do you feel about the UI in games? For games that support it, do you push everything closer or is it comfortable to leave things where they're at?

Here's a link if needed.

Instead of a standard 2560*1440 resolution at 16:9 you'll just have a 2844,44 * 1600 resolution basically. Also a lot of games still support 16:10 aspect ratio's too at 2560*1600.

So now for your points:

1 Odd yeah but people want taller screens so they made this

2 It will still do variable refresh rate so don't worry

3 Depends on the software but there are multiple ways I don't recommend it tho as I've seen some weird results

4 Ergotron lx could work

5 Tried a ultrawide for a while ended up very much so disliking it for all things I did and returned it was a the g7. I did not like the loss of height a ultrawide caused  and since I play games from a few years ago mostly it was pretty much pointless to me or games looked horribly stretched. When it did work it was just ok. Also super sucked for multitasking as I had to get a program to make my monitor behave as multiple screens so I could snap and such.

Anything that will run on 3440 X 1440 will run on it.

G-Sync "Compatible" is better than Freesync but only slightly belter than Freesync premium. The module works slightly better but has issues so it is off on my LG 1440p 144hz monitor.

Overclocking means they usually have to drop from 10 bit to 8 bit so not worth it for me.

Mine is not used as a gaming monitor. I have OLEDs for that.

The wall mount VESA I had for my 32" LG that is rated for 14lbs and it did not work on it since the monitor is about 18lbs. I never got another one.

I have a 34" 3440 X 1440p monitor that I used for several years and all my games that worked on it work the same on the 38". Some older games like Fallout 4 I used mods to fix everything but if you make a custom resolution in the Nvidia control panel for 1440p it most game will run at that.

I even played DosBox games on it.

The monitor is taller than a 27" monitor so you don't get that "I am looking through a pillbox slit" feeling.

It does take a lot more to run.

When I went from a 1440p to a  3440 X 1440 monitor and then to a 3840 X 1600 monitor it was a 40 frame lose in most games.

This is what it looks like going from 1440p to 380 X 1600 in SOTTR.

If you don't have a 2080 ti/3070 ti or better it is not worth it.
