Manfrotto 190XPROB Tripod repair log

I got this tripod on kinda bad condition from a goodwill for 4 USD.

When I got back home I took it complete apart to clean the dirt and lubricate the legs and locks.

The legs don't have feet so the tubes were crammed with dried mud so I took a 12in drill bit and hammered it thought the dirt.

2021-06-30.thumb.jpg.634c708bb968c7293e1bd93b7ca82550.jpg

Yeah that took me forever to put it back together

The ball head is a cheapo but solid neewer ball head its full aluminum.

Feet are cut wine corks. My moms idea, my idea was taping bike tire.

The head and legs support my DSLR with a 400mm which is like 6 pounds so thats good.

The tripod is missing a lock so this is a long post on how I made one out of a allen key and a random screw that fit.

IMG_20210620_230303.thumb.jpg.e3444c4f0037b91ef4d9386e3c6057a8.thumb.jpg.8122b7e6efef5a1e11e752a24fd1871c.jpg

I first had a random screw and carried a screw driver with me but that got board fast.

So I cut a allen key with a dermal to about 1.5in, let the sparks fly.

1067664115_P1010699(2).thumb.JPG.12769dba7553fbe10862595456417921.JPG

568097794_P1010702(2).thumb.JPG.2d3bc93a149af46ce0e3f0d4c3ff7e5d.JPG

That fits super well.

Yes I was wearing gloves and a pair of safety glasses.

Also the lens has a uv filter.

IMG_20210630_180105.thumb.jpg.e49935ef8625cd3c797d4d3ed25cf644.jpg.380322f7fa85afcd2f2785e2475fa040.jpg

I put some electrical heat shrink for grip.

Than some JB weld with a clamp for about IDK overnight.

701315976_P1010703(2).thumb.JPG.b57baf0dca7b8c74a4725e2c4f631cdf.JPG

This build breakdown:

4USD for tripod.

ball head was one I had.

2USD for the heat shrink.

5USD for the JBweld.

2USD for the allen key set.

Thats about 15 USD for this tripod.

Manfrotto's are awesome tripods. I've had mine for around 20 years now and it's still just as good as the day I purchased it! The head that you have on yours looks like a video camera head. You can get a camera head relatively cheap on eBay:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/144142499170?hash=item218f8ffd62:g:16gAAOSwFTJhDTs~

Or, if you have surplus cash, you can get a original Manfrotto head like mine:

https://www.manfrotto.com/ca-en/3d-super-pro-3-way-tripod-head-with-safety-catch-229/

I didn't pay that much when I got my tripod, but if you can find a used one, they are great!

The next part to add to the ball head is a arca swiss mount, because I have polar pro's traverse strap mount, I am getting tired of switching plates to neewer's plate.

so something like this.

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1459756-REG/smallrig_dbc2280_quick_release_clamp_and.html

I am gonna have to take off the plate mounting system and replace it with the small rig one.

I like mine still nice and sturdy and I am used to it after using it for a couple of months.

I also hate this style as the knobs don't provide much leverage to lock the ball head.

Mine is a lever style which I can pull out and adjust the angle to put more leverage.
