An all-rounder with good specs!

souperM

Hi Friends,

I would really appreciate your advice on developing a build.

I am trying to create a system around a 3090 but will be using it for mining to subsidize its cost.

Trying to optimize for cost/performance on all components except GPU/CPU.

Objectives (not in order):

  1. Semi-high-end pc

  2. Good aesthetics - I would love to purchase a Snow White edition of the case but it is not in stock. An all white build is not possible as I have a black GPU/MB

  3. Good temperature control as 3090 will be used for mining when not gaming - I am limited to a 280mm rad for side mounting in the case, there is no space for a rad at the top

  4. Good 1440p/4K gaming performance

  5. Ability to host 24/7 uptime docker services

  6. Running VMs (2-3 at a time)

  7. Significant file transfers of photo and video library (I have 2 x 14tb drives not listed in the components below)

  8. No plan to overclock the system other than attempt to lower ram CAS latency - I have chosen 4 x 8GB for aesthetics (i.e. more color) however do you think I should swap to 2x16gb (I will not be purchasing B-Die)

Please tell me what changes you would recommend?

Do you have recommendations for 140mm fans I could use on the AIO? Corsair QL140's are supposed to have bad static flow.

Thank you!

A few things you may want to change

Dont waste 130$ on windows, just buy a windows key from scdkey or a similar site, or if you are fine with a random liscence ebay, 15-20$ and 3$ respectively

Water is abit expensive, consider swapping for a dark rock pro 4 which will problably perform the same or better than the aio for 90$ amazon

You may want to use a 1000w psu just to be safe cause these rtx 3090s have some insane power spikes.

3 fans for 100$ !? Thats ridicolous, maybe consider 3 fans for 40-60$ instead of the ridicolous price of 100$ for 3 aka 33$ a fan

200$ for 1tb ssd??? A 1tb sn 550 will cost around 100$.

Srry if this comes off as rude but yea there are some questionable choices here tbh

Thanks for your insights. I hear what you are saying, definitely agree on some points and can give more context to others:

  • $130 on windows - This is the default value inserted by PCPartPicker, not what I actually plan to buy. I will definitely try a cd key site
  • This is my first build where I have a nicer budget and have decided to aim for for a semi-high end PC which is the reason why I am splashing out :
    • on the liquid AIO (for the aesthetic benefit)
    • the fans (they are definitely expensive but actually on sale - again I am going for the looks)
  • Unfortunately my current case only allows SF and SFX power supplies. 850W is the largest PSU you can get without paying over $250 for a 1000W unit
  • I do A LOT of file processing based work so the higher throughput of the SN850 should make me life easier. However any additional drives will be much more reasonable (e.g. I am using regular HDDs for long-term storage)

Maybe just buy 2 sn 550s and raid 0 them? So 2tb with the combined speed of 2 ssds

Have a look at the Arctic Liquid Freezer AIO as they now do an A/RGB version. They also do A/RGB fans. Should be cheaper than an NZXT cooler and Corsair fans.

I would stick with the SN850 SSD if you are doing lots of large file transfers etc. A Sabrent Rocket Gen 4 is cheaper though on Amazon.

Jk i hate rainbow puke but single colour can look really good on some builds, only reason to avoid rgb is when you are on a really tight budget but then again you can just buy one of those cheap led strips and get some decent lighting that way.

A good aio cooler, also comes in weed joke number mm as maximum size (420mm), i guess if you are ocing your cpu to its limits this would be useful but the cpu would problably hit an unsafe voltage like 1.5v before thermal throttle anyways.
