Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web, is to auction his source code as an NFT for good causes

Summary

Sir Tim Berners-Lee is planning to sell four different items as an NFT, including "the original time-stamped files" of the source code, "an animated visualisation" of that code, a letter from Sir Tim about the process and a "digital poster" of the code created by him. The auction is scheduled to run from 23-30th June, with an opening bid of $1,000. All proceeds will be put towards causes chosen by Sir Tim and his wife.

"Why an NFT? Well, it's a natural thing to do as when you're a computer scientist and when you write code and have been for many years," said Sir Tim in press material issued by Sotheby's.

"It feels right to digitally sign my autograph on a completely digital artefact."

Quite surprising. I don't think anyone was expecting this but here we are.

Just slightly late to the party. I am certain that it will still fetch some nice sum for him but if he did this at the start of this year, I am certain there would be more hype around it.

Weird, he was working for CERN, they owned the code, then made the code open source.

He doesn't own the code. I guess he's auctioning off his copy? That means I can auction off the Linux kernel as an NFT I guess.

I'd rather pay for a physical picture of the code with an actual autograph on it. Just me?

Still don't understand why anyone would actually pay large sums of money, for what is essentially just a web link to a third party server that can go down at any time without any input from you.

Are we going to have "NFT collectors" in the future, who lives in a barren apartment and anyone who visits them are told "check out all my art pieces", only for them to pull out a tablet and scroll through a bunch of images like anyone would on Google Images ? That's just sad.
