Visually inspecting a 3090 FE to make sure its legit

klifinpol

So tomorrow (in about 14h) I'm meeting up with a guy (off of our version of craigslist) to buy a new RTX 3090 FE

and I am wondering aside from making sure that the item is packaged correctly and making sure that

the dimensions fit the bill, and that it has 3 Display ports and an hdmi, what are some of the other things i should look out for?

Honestly?

If you're meeting in a place where this is feasible, bring your rig to the place you're meeting up and run it in your system, benchmarks and all, before committing to the transaction. If the other person has nothing to hide, they should be okay with this. Alternatively, ask the other person to bring their rig and see it running before committing.

It's entirely possible that I misinterpreted/misread your topic and/or question. This happens more often than I care to admit. Apologies in advance.

You're meeting to buy something that is as much as some used cars, which you would for DAMN SURE test drive before buying.

''Test driving'' would indeed be the ideal scenario, but I don't think I'll get the chance to do it, because we are meeting in public (drug deal style).

He is going to provide me with a recipt (so its under original nvida warranty) and the unopened box, but again those dont really mean

much if I get an expensive brick...

Saddly i can't test it out on my current rig, because the power supply wouldn't be able to handle it,

and i'm still waitng for other parts to complete my new one.... ughh i hate the shortage...

Well then I'd call it off as it is EASY to forge a warranty paper. That and the unponend box are like GIGANTIC RED FLAGS. Either a scalper selling it on or someone looking for a gullible desperate person.

So open it and look for ANY spec of dust, fingerprint,... ANYTHING that shows it has been touched or looked at. To make sure it is 100% real. Even then easy enough to sell you a brick.

But just like buying a used car which this thing literally is the price of a decent used car you do not buy one without seeing it in action.

If you have no way to test drive it feasibly, then call off the deal. Seriously.

I would not be willing to lose the amount of money I'd have to pay for a 3090 FE to a scam. If you can't take every (or even any) reasonable route to ensure with 100% confidence that it's a legit card that works as it should, that's a complete non-starter.

There will be other chances to get a card, remote as they may seem. Ultimately, ask yourself, "am I willing to lose this sum of money to a scam?"

....  Go buy a 750W PSU and test it with that?

If you're getting a 3090, the price of a 750W PSU isn't that big.

So you're buying a 3090 but don't have a PSU to run it?  So buy the PSU and test it, since you'll need it.

Just curious what is the price?  What makes this clandestine drug deal such a big deal?  Do you need a 3090 that badly you'll buy it without testing?

$3100 in US, so you're not even getting a deal here. I would call it off until you can actually test it. Are 3090's in your area going for way more than this where it presents as some sort of "deal"?

I understand it's work, but people have been doing 3D rendering on 1080Ti's and 2080Ti's for years now.

Just because it's a 3090 w/ 24GB RAM doesn't mean you turn your brain off.  It's a nice bump from previous gens, but it's still JUST a video card.  Which there are MANY others that do the job for cheaper and less risk.

You wouldn't act this way for any other product, so why a stupid GPU?

You're being irrational and when you step back.. it's just a $1500 GPU for 2x it's normal MSRP that is just a little better than the previous gen.  It's not some God Touched item that you have to have or you'll die 😉

I've said my piece, you do you. Hope it works out for you whichever way you go.

I understand it's work, but people have been doing 3D rendering on 1080Ti's and 2080Ti's for years now.

Sup gtx 970m gang till like 8months ago. Then to a vega 56 and whilst sure it takes a bit longer I just let it rip whilst I sleep as I've done since the dawn of time basically :p.

What 850w unit? The 3090 NEEDS a A TIER 850W UNIT.

As for furmark it pretty much doesnt use the cpu so it will work and load the card to 100%.

We couldnt get it to fit in the chassy but all the stuff he brought with it and the way it was packaged (still in the original pacaging from notebooksbiliger.de with all the paperwork sealed inside) and the fact he was willing to go trhough with the test was proof enough for me that the sale was legit...

But we'll see... if i got screwed or not.
