antec How much temp can a PSU tolerate?

How much heat can PSU tolerate?

My ambient is 38C

 

While Gaming at 144Fps in Apex Legends

Gpu- 69C ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)     1660auper

Cpu- 58C with AIO     Ryzen 3500

Vrm- 64.5C Asrock    X570 PG4

Chipset- 64.5C   x570

Game Drive (SSD)- 40-48C Bx500

 

PSU exhaust is moderately warm to touch. Maybe around 50C. Can keep the hand on it for a prolonged time without any discomfort.

 

My PSU is rated for 50C.

What does this rating mean? Is this the max tolerable load of PSU? Or is this the temp beyond which PSU efficiency and accuracy will dip.

How much temperature can a PSU actually tolerate?

 

PSU model: Antec EAG 750W, System total load 300ish Watts, 

PSU is a rebranded Seasonic One Focus GM Gold.

For most companies, it is the max temperature at which the PSU is capable of outputting 100% of what it's rated at on the label. So a 600W PSU rated at 40C will be capable of outputting 600W at 40C. They list it's operating temperature range as 0-40c, I would also assume you can let it run at slightly higher ambient temperatures. You are fine.

Alot. Operating temp is 0-40C ambient.

this means that the PSU is rated for 50c INTAKE AIR temp, not components temp under full load

 

i probed my RM850x, HX1000 and AX1600i with a thermal probe, during low load, the fan doesnt spin and the exhaust grill goes up higher than if i put a load on it and the fan spins

as long as the intake air is below the rated temp, it should be fine

 

do take note that ambient temp =/= psu intake temp as it may be recycling hot air from components, and assuming you have sufficient clearance for it to breathe

So i guess I am in the safe spot as my load is near the 50% mark and ambients are 38ish.

Psu is bottom mounted in its own airflow path from bottom to back. So I guess heat from components won't matter much.

then as long as you dont live in a sauna and your PSU have access to adequate airflow, i wouldn't worry about it

yes. 38C is very high ambient. but your psu has a fan that if not failed sohuld cool the psu enough to be under 50C

As per the graph on Antec's website the semi passive fan won't run at decent speed until PSU hits 55-60%. And at my load of around 300W it isnt even close to 50%. Don't know if temperature has a play in this fan cycle.

 

 

So, the bottom line is that the temps are fine as long as the PSU gets airflow from the bottom. 

Also Since PSU is at a lower load @50% of rated it should be okay. And 0-50/40 is the rated ambient temps at which it will work properly.

 

Also I will try not to run the PC at noon as its the peak at that time. I will use my laptop in my Study room which is Air Conditioned.

No.  We found out a while back that Seasonic is very deceptive about their PSU temperature ratings.  Antec's spec is honest.

 

Read the whole line:

That means the PSU is rated at 40°C.  Not 50°C.  It can only do 80% load at 50°C.  My guess is there's a 50°C OTP.

 

A TRUE 50°C rated PSU will do 100% at 50°C.
