Radeon HD 7770 powered but not recognized by system

I recently bought an AMD Radeon HD 7770 (1GB DDR5) to put into an older system in hopes of making a cheaper build in the current market. I put the card into a HP Pro 3500 MT and am using an EVGA 500w Bronze power supply. The system works fine and boots with integrated intel graphics, but the graphics card won't even show up in device manager, and upon trying to download AMD drivers, it says a graphics card is not detected. Despite this, the graphics card's fan is spinning and it is receiving power. Can anyone give me some ideas of what to try?

Some mobos can be rather picky with PCIE expansion cards.  I have some industrial boards that will just 'Not See' certain graphics card, like my R9 280X, while my R9 390X works fine.  Just bizarrely picky.  The 280X is just invisible to the board, doesn't even list anything in the PCIE slot in teh BIOS.

 

I'm not surprised that an old HP tower has similar issues.  First thing I'd do is sanity check it, make sure something works in that slot to rule out the slot itself for sure.  Then look at updating the BIOS, maybe that will fix it, updated the BIOS can improve PCIE compatibility.  If that doesn't work... You're probably out of luck and should try a different graphics card.

Make sure your monitor is plugged into the back of the HD 7770, and NOT to the back of the motherboard.

What make and model is your monitor?

Are you using some kind of DVI-to-VGA adapter, or something?

 

What is the make and model of your HD 77700?

 

If you plug your monitor into the back of the motherboard, then you are using the Integrated Graphics, the the video card is disabled.

(usually done automatically by the motherboard)

You need to plug your monitor into the graphics card.
