IBM 2nm chip breakthrough claims more power with less energy

Summary

IBM have now created a 2nm chip in one of its labs. IBM says that the chip can improve performance by 45% compared to the current 7nm chips found in Ryzen. They also said that the chip uses 75% less energy as well. It claims the tech could quadruple mobile phone battery life. IBM claim they can fit 50 billion transistors on the size of a fingernail to roughly quote IBM.

My thoughts

IBM may have done it now but will take ages for the desktop computing industry moving towards this new standard. There was a four year interval between IBM getting 7nms and AMD's Ryzen processors having them in 2019. Intel still hasn't transitioned to 7nm. I predict that 2nm will first appear publicly and attainably, is in mobile phone processor chips. But what is really strange about this is that IBM are telling us about the future of chips, when we can't even get hold of the current latest and greatest chips. This chip shortage is not only affecting the tech industry but also the car industry and many, many others. This is the worst time possible to announce this.

Its possible they could. They worked together before with strained silicon, and it was pretty good.. It honestly wouldn't surprise me. Its a cut throat industry..

I would think more transistor per unit volume combined with lower voltages would make them more susceptible to radiation exposure causing an error.

Isn’t this a decade away?! A breakthrough doesn’t necessarily lead to a viable product. Prototypes are easy.

I wouldn't go so far to say that prototypes are easy, but I agree. The industry is still years away from this becoming a viable product for consumers.

I mean apple is already using tsmc 5nm... tsmc is already developing and close to finishing up 3nm... So I guess IBM getting a break through is good. Samsung is soon getting there with 5nm

What is going on with globalfoundaries and intel idk...

It's not actually "their process", IBM is exclusively research and development and licenses their technology out to others, often through partnerships. IBM is not a fab company and sold that side of the business to GlobalFoundries.
