Hey guys, it's really late and I'm waiting for some videos to render so i thought I'd tell me story of piracy to bore the random people curious enough to click on this thread.

So basically my first bout with piracy was LimeWire, when I was younger I really had no idea how it all worked and just figured you were supposed to obtain music this way. After I started to get older and learned you were supposed to purchase music I decided I'd buy a Green Day album (I like Green Day when I was little.) However it was a few allowances worth of money so disappointed I asked for money to buy it. Instead my dad said what songs do you want and then proceeded to use Grabit (what I presume to be a dead program now) to download the album I wanted and place it on a CD for me. I continued having my dad make these CD's for me for all my favorite bands and would use them to play on my 5 disc changer stereo.

As I got older yet again I built my first gaming computer, it was a really old (new at the time) Dell OEM PC in which I added a 400Watt PSU 2Gb of RAM and a 7800GT. It was a beastly computer, I remember playing Left 4 Dead and CS 1.6(not as impressive) at the max settings and getting great frame rates. After awhile new games came out that I wanted but couldn't afford. I asked my parents but money was tight. That's when my naive childlike brain started searching "How to get Game X for free" in Google. After a lot of research I figured out how to torrent, that's how I got Left 4 Dead 2 when it was released and a few other games. I continued on this path until my PC became to outdated to play games and I switched to consoles. Fast forward to more recently my friends and I wanted to play older games and have LAN matches. Unable to find a way to purchase them we pirated the game and played for hours.

Fast forward further to when I got my new gaming PC,  I didn't have very much money to get games so yet again I continued to pirate games I wanted to play and try. I also wanted to try making YouTube videos so I pirated Fraps, Sony Vegas and Photoshop.

Finally I ended up getting a job, the first thing I did was pay my dad back for my gaming computer and thanked him for getting it for me. (It was around $800 but I gave him $1000 for interest.) From then on I swore I would purchase everything.

I have bought well over 100 games through Steam and Humble Bundles. I purchased Fraps and Sony Vegas (it's a lot but worth paying for). for Adobe products i ended up taking a college class in my senior year of High School that gave me Photoshop and Illustrator for "free" so that's how I got legit copies of those.

So that's my story, how I finally beat piracy and continue to buy everything that I would like to have rather than pirate it. I hope you enjoyed this story and if you didn't... Why are you still here?

The last time I tried to make a point about piracy, my argument got misconstrued, and I suspect a lot of people disliked me after that. Not that I care what people think, but I'd much rather steer clear of the hornet's nest on this forum.

Never....Ever...

buy a legit copy of a >$300 software

I personally do not like Adobe premiere and figured it'd be a good investment further down the line, it's a lot of fun to play with and one of my friends that likes making YouTube videos and is much bigger than I pays me about $25 a month to edit his videos for him so I've made about a third of it back :) in most cases though I would agree with you.

Piracy is an interesting topic, in it's most basic form sometimes it makes sense other times it doesn't. No one really needs to take it much further than that but we ARE on the internet. A magical place where the simplest of topics becomes a heated debate within seconds.

It's almost depressing sometimes, especially when i remember how excited I was when I had $20 not more than a few years ago and now $20 makes me die a little inside when I realize how little it means now.

He was! He may have been the one who introduced me to piracy but he always taught me to be responsible and to be a good person. He also didn't want me to actually get into it as much as I did. Almost seemed disappointed whenever I talked about it.

i disagree with that on the point that if you are ever making money in any way through the use of that software you should pay for it

Not even that if certain devs continue to get there way and just flag any gameplay footage people upload. Maybe the new Yahoo YouTube clone will be much more reasonable when it comes to policies.

I know that piracy can be good and bad but... I have been reading a lot of opinions on piracy on this forum and I have to ask.. when did people start thinking for good of companies? I mean, if I cant afford something and I want it really bad now I will download it and buy later when I get money.. its not like I was stealing it or something. And no please for love of god.. dont compare this to stealing a car.

You make it sound like a serious condition OP. It's like a "How I stopped cutting" thread. :P Although if you can pay for it then great, but don't get too generous. Some products really don't deserve the money they cost.

God, I loathe that stupid thing. Whoever made it should be put into a sack and beaten with bootleg tapes in socks.

Your looking at one right here. I say this especially in relation to software. If you like it and use it regularly but it to support them so they can keep it up. I also recommend it to those I know plenty if I think its something that really does a good job.
