If you've played on XBOX Live/PSN long enough when L33T speak was in every single name, you're used to this .. sadly lol

Oh 1337 speak was around way before those days. But, it did rise in popularity quite quickly when internet gaming / internet culture started to become "a thing" (after 1996).  Therefore, I definitely understand your point. ?

It probably was .. although that's before my time so I'll take your word for it ;)

Quite interesting to see how such an old phenomenon is still going strong today!

I remember a video on it's origins and first intended use, my mind says it was from LGR, YouTube search however thinks differently.

Well, as far as how I was able to learn how to use it properly (read, understand, use it myself, etc.). It started for me playing Quake, Diablo, Unreal, StarCraft and many other games online competitively (all of these games debuted before 1999). Then there were areas online where you could communicate with your "Clan members". Specifically: mIRC, ICQ, and Message Boards (later on; AOL Instant Messenger [AIM] for more personal communications).

The reason, as far as I can remember for "1337 Speak" beginning; was it was a play on the phrase, "Uber 1337" or "Uber 1337 H4X0R (Uber 1337 Haxor)". Uber translating to outstanding or super or exceptional (über - German). The phrase arose because people would be so good at the particular game that they were playing, that typically they would be called a hacker (haxor / h4x0r / etc.). Eventually, this became hyperbole, satire if you will (sometimes the people might have actually been hacking, you could never really tell in those days - not much has changed, sadly). I saw it evolve to the point where people started replacing the letters with numbers, almost entirely (it evolved into a code language too, where there wasn't really a line drawn between whether people were serious when using it or not -- like much of the stuff on the internet today). This also had a lot to do with the culture itself, as the people playing the games weren't unintelligent to say the least; in the past, etymologically speaking, letters and numbers were interchangeable in certain languages (thus, this seemed almost like a tribute to those past languages with similar alphabetical/numerical systems). I'm sure there are other tidbits here and there I'm missing, but this is the gist of it from my POV (seeing it rise to popularity from nothingness - its evolution and whatnot).

Relevant video about meme prediction from one of the greats (in response to how such an old phenomenon is still going to this very day):

You can take a look at all of the Tech that I own and have owned over the years in my About Me section and on my Profile.

I'm Swiss and my Mother language is Swiss German of course, I speak the Aargauer dialect. If you want to watch a great video about Swiss German which explains the language and outlines the Basics, then click here.

If I could just play Videogames and consume Cool Content all day long for the rest of my life, then that would be sick.

I feel like if there is going to be a discussion on 1337 speak then it needs to take into account that at some point it changed to the point of \/\/r171|\|g l1|<3 7|-|15 :D

Maybe this topic isn't the place to to discuss the fine culture found all around the internet . although I wouldn't mind it ;)
