m.2 nvme ssd gen 3 drive in an m.2 nvme gen 4 slot

bosin

I am building a new gaming system and I was just wondering if I could put my OS drive m.2 SSD gen 3 drive in the m.2 gen 4 slot? I purchased the ASUS TUF GAMING Z590-PLUS motherboard and I will be purchasing the Intel I5-11600k in which I know that the m.2 gen 4 slot will be activated by that processor. I am just curious if it will be backwards compatible with the gen 3 drive. I am well aware that if it is backwards compatible, that it will only run at gen 3 speeds. I eventually plan on eventually getting a gen 4 m.2 when funds come available.
