I mean, itll solve it good. Cant have chip shortages when the fab giants are focused on developing a still new fabrication, that they cant make any chips. Very smart.

You realize the chip shortage isn't exactly caused by a shortage of silicon, right?

 

We call it a "silicon shortage", but the issue is that they can't manufacture enough chips (made out of silicon) because demand for these chips is too high, not that silicon itself is in short supply

Well, I mean, i'm not an expertTM, but there's almost certainly not the infrastructure in place to start making computer chips from Gallium Nitride. We could spend millions and millions of dollars on developing a new type of chip, or, we could keep using existing infrastructure.

 

It's not as simple as "Oh let's use this instead". Do we even know if they are compatible with existing hardware and software?

 

There is not a shortage of silicon itself, there's just not enough chip production to match demand. The earth's crust is ~30% silicon for Christ's sake. I'm willing to bet that Gallium is far rarer than silicon.

I don't see why not. The material a chip is made out of doesn't change anything about the instruction set it can understand. At worst you'd need a different kind of power delivery (less/more voltage) and maybe different cooling solution (less/more heat)

GaN is good for high power electronics, but would be way inappropriate for a CPU, not to mention insanely expensive compared to silicon
