What would you all think of something like a TechTipsOverflow?

f1rxf1y

Greetings fellow LTTers! As a career software engineer, I spend a lot of time on StackOverflow. Earlier today, I had (and still have) a simple question about a dbrand product. I started thinking... what if there was a TechTipsOverflow for "Tech Tips" questions and issues within this community? Forums and Reddit are much more suited for discussion than one-off questions. I think it would be super useful to have a TechTipsOverflow to supplement these forums.

EDIT: I've never been a fan of asking one-off questions in forums or on Reddit, so consider this topic an effort to add value to the following question: Does anyone know if the dbrand Swarm (honeycomb) skin is textured? I want to order it for my 2019 16" MacBook Pro, but I also want to know if I can put vinyl stickers on it as well.

With that out of the way, what do you guys think of a StackOverflow-like web app for this community?

Edited by f1rxf1y
Re-titled topic to better encourage discussion. I also "redacted" my irrelevant question.

You ask that like people here research their topics before asking questions on the forum.

You'll have more success with this if you edit your title to at least mention what the question is about...

The forum functions well enough for one off questions - provided members post in the right subforum and title their posts accurately 😉

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Looks like it is, juddging by the reflections seen in this video:

Looks like the ridges on the hexagons are proud a bit, while the hexagons themselves are inset a bit.

Not sure if (vinyl) stickers would adhere very well to that surface though.

P.S. Hexagons are the bestagons.

There are a whole bunch of different sections on this forum, fit for different types of questions.

Not every thread is obligated to start some deep discussion, simple/short questions are welcomed just as much ^^

Agreed. Thanks for pointing that out. However, this post was really more to discuss the potential for a StackOverflow-like offering by LMG. 🙂 I just threw my question in for fun—which was probably a mistake. I'm going to edit it out.

Unless I'm completely blind, I don't see a subforum on the homepage specifically for one-off questions. Could you direct me please?

Before you read my reply, please see that I re-titled the thread and edited my original post 🙂.

In response to your comment, though, that's exactly why I would think something like StackOverflow would be useful to this community.

There's no subforum for "one off questions" but there are plenty of subforums for various topics you might want to ask about. For example your question would fit here https://linustechtips.com/forum/88-laptops-and-pre-built-systems/

I don't quite understand what you are proposing here. AFAIK StackOverflow is like a forum, just made with different style. Each questions (here threads/topics) has several answers with OP providing more info if needed. Sure, the replies had sub-threads going. This was something we used to have with the previous forum software.

The starkest difference is probably voting for most helpful answer. However, this has been discussed and turned down as with such large and diverse community, it could be misused.

All of them. Pick category, post you question. Gets answers and ask follow-up questions if needed. Sounds like you are new to forums overall, while at the same time I could have sworn you have been in the internet longer than me (I've been browsing different forums for 20 years).
