FPS Limit = Better/More consistence frame timing?

I limit all my games to 98fps (100Hz Gsync panel) and in games where my GPU then doesn't have to work at 100%, its the smoothest gameplay I can possibly get and is noticeably better than if my GPU is sitting at 100%.

As the total suggest, I am wondering if limiting my framerate will improve or help improve consistency of my frame timing.

I have a 1440P 144hz monitor, thinking of limiting my FPS to 165 system wide.

Yes it will help with the consistency of your frame timing, but only if you put the cap at a level that's below your typical average FPS.

Putting an FPS limit of 165 will not help at all in scenarios where you might typically only get 150 FPS or less.

If you consistently get between 200-300 FPS in a game, then limiting it to 120 FPS will give you a very consistent frame time.

cap at 144 fps but if you want less fps drops raise it to the 200-250 range

Are you experiencing from frametime instability?

If not, why bother?

Frametime stability is only an issue if you're very CPU bound, and from my experience, thread count bound

I am experiencing inconsistence input delay, which LTT have touched on about it may be inconsistence frame timing.

My CPU is being stress to 80% usage for the games that have inconsistence input delay.

I generally want to ask the question to see if there is anything I can do about it, without upgrading anything.

Is that overall usage or highest usage on a thread?

In both cases it seems like you may be CPU bound

Do check frametime graph using rivatuner statistic server that comes with MSI afterburner

Also monitor GPU usage, if it keeps jumping around instead of being pinned at 95%+, it's most likely CPU bound scenario

I recently set my frame limit in Nvidia Control Panel to 150FPS for my 144Hz monitor. Frametimes are now constant at 6.66ms and reduces the load on my graphics card as I can't see 200+ on my monitor.

So far, I can't complain.

80% Overall CPU usage, GPU usage jumps between 90% - 99%.

Will enable frametime graph to check.

Might be slightly CPU bound there

What's your cpu and gpu?

You can enable the graph yeah, and limit your fps, see if that helped any

Pretty much the same for my GPU utilization, but not CPU. I'm playing World of Tanks at ultra/max settings at 2560x1440 and GPU utilizations are around 70-85%, CPU utilizations around 10-25%.

CPU usage is pretty high.

Ooo, yeah 3080 on 1440p, that's pushing your CPU hard

Give fps cap a go, the 8700 should have enough threads, but maybe not enough for your game to have stable frametime, seeing how overall usage is 80%, which is stupidly high for gaming load

So I have been running Rainbow 6 Siege for the pass 2 hours, here is what happened:
1) Limiting FPS to 165 does make my frame time consistence, around 6ms.

2) However, when I did not set a limiter, the frame time of unlimited framerate is much lower, at 4ms.

3) With unlimited framerate, my frame time jumps between 4ms to 8ms depending on what is happen on screen.

How exactly are you measuring your input delay?

Are you playing in high stakes tournaments? If not limit your FPS to just below your refresh rate and turn on Gsync if available.

I am not playing in high stakes tournaments, but I am quite competitive. I have not measure my input delay with tools, but it is noticeable as if my ping have spiked. (My ping is normal the whole time) This "laggy feeling" is solved by limiting my framerate, even though it produces higher frametime. But since it is not jumping all around, it is not noticeable.

This is what cause a bad experience, the spikes to 8ms

If limiting fps makes your game run smoother, definitely limit it.
