550w enough for RTX 3070?

maxrobbo99

I currently have an Asus Strix 550w 80+ Gold PSU in a system with an i5 9600k and GTX1660 but I have upgraded to a Gigabyte RTX 3070 Gaming OC and I have checked on PC part pickers and it does go within the power limits but I was wondering if it is still within the limits of the notorious power spikes of the 30 series GPU's

no it is not. For sustained use it will be fine but the spikes  will likely overload the poor psu

Yes and no.

Yes, 550W with your build is enough to run a RTX 3070. Keep in mind Nvidia's recommendation is paired with an i9, 64GB RAM, etc.

But sadly, a bigger no. Even though the Asus Strix PSU is a Tier A PSU, it's unfortunately based on the Seasonic Focus Plus platform. That platform is notorious for not being able to handle high power spikes, like with RX Vega 56/64 cards. The RTX 3070 also falls in that range, hence it's too risky to pair it with if it goes to 100% load.

I ever almost decided to buy that Strix PSU myself, but I backed off after reading about the flaws on the PSU tier list on this forum. Still a great PSU though for anything before the RTX 3000 series, except the AMD RX Vega cards.

You have the GPU and the PSU, so you could just try it...?

Though, really don't be surprised  if it causes shutdowns, as the Strix is just a Focus Plus Gold (which already has issues with transients from GPUs), with worse heatsinks and an even worse fan.

The newer Seasonics are just fine though. They can handle the transients.

A lot of old stock gets dumped to Amazon, you can find a bunch of them there so make sure you know what you are looking for.

If you shop at Newegg they only list current offerings.

AMD R7 5800X3D | Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 EVO, 1x T30

Asus Crosshair VIII Dark Hero | 32GB G.Skill Trident Z @ 3733C14

Zotac 4070 Ti Trinity OC @ 3060/1495 | WD SN850, SN850X, SN770

Seasonic Vertex GX-1000 | Fractal Torrent Compact RGB, Many CFM's

  • 1 month later...

Update:

I had ran the system for approx. a month or 2 with the 550w and then started to get issues so bit the bullet and upgraded. I had held out on installing the GPU for too long and just thought I'd try it and tbf it did run smooth for a good while.

I think the issues were more XMP based however as the whole system didn't crash, just games would crash.
