Internet is much slower on PC than on mobile

I use my mobile's hotspot for internet access, in the morning the internet on my pc was running pretty fast, just like my mobile connection. And now its like 25-30 kbps ! I am sure I haven't hit the data cap and I even tried using USB tethering. Also I was trying to download apex legends via steam and this issue is affecting that tooimage.png.7fc598d291a0fe618c0537963acaf6fa.pngThe speed should be near 1 Megabyte per sec or something but 274 KB/s is way off ! Please help ! On my phone its running at the speeds I would expect but not my PC. I even tried using the omen network boost and give steam top priority !

Run a speed test. Most likely it is Steam as I run into this issue as well. Also your plan could be "unlimited" but in reality you get something like 20Gbs then they throttle you to 100-300Kb/s

I've seen some data plans that only throttle certain apps. So a speed test will still show full speed whilst Netflix, YouTube and Steam get sub 1mb speeds.

Any website I access on my PC, be it YT (which definitely wasn't slow earlier as I was watching wan show on my PC by the same connection and wasn't slow at all), is now slow. The speedtest says my download speed is 0.75 MBps and Upload is like 2-2.1 MBps but then the ping is around 400 ms

I use Airtel and am from India, could it be that my ISP is throttling steam ? I am pretty sure not a lot of people know or use steam here, so that shouldn't be a problem. But could it be the fact that lots of people nearby are using the same ISP at the same time ? And also I checked on my carrier's phone app it says I have 11.2 GB of 12 GB left so data cap is definitely not a problem

Your cell provider can throttle any tethered or hotspot device after a certain amount of data pretty easily.

For the month? They might also throttle you during heavy usage periods in general too.

This makes sense. I live in Canada and used to do this for my Xbox before when the wifi was too weak to reach my room. It worked fine for a few months but then after I got the same issues with slow speeds, and additionally severe in game lag and connection issues. After a bit of research I found that there may be an issue with the NAT type so I took a look at it.

 

3 types of NAT: open, moderate, and strict

 

Open is the best one, everything can flow through perfectly here

Moderate is alright, most of the stuff will be fine but you might have a few small issues

Strict is the bad one. This one basically stopped me from doing any online gaming and even affected my download speed.

 

I tried to fix it by resetting ports, changing my static ip and whatever worked but, nothing really seemed to work.  Later I started having issues with my router itself where it was doing the same thing, turns out my routers memory was full so we needed to reset it so it would work smoothly again.  

 

Because it was a memory overload that was physically on the router, that was super easy to fix just by a reset but with phones I haven't found anything yet. I'm not too smart about phones I mainly deal with pc stuff but I'm guessing that there might be something similar in the phone that needs to be reset. I couldn't figure it out so I just left it for a few months and got a new router instead (routers provided by your ISP are generally bad so please do consider getting an external router, even something between like $60-$130 USD makes such a huge difference)  

 

I left the phone's hotspot for a few months and didn't use and then I tried it again later and, it worked. Not really sure what happened but I'm guessing the memory dedicated to the hotspot cleared itself since I hadn't used those ports or connections in so long.

 

Given you are using the mobile hotspot as the main connection, This next part won't apply to you but I'm gonna keep it in here anyways incase someone stumbles across an issue that is similar to this. 

 

next part only applies if you have a router I repeat next part only applies if you have a router

 

I don't think there is a real solution to this for now but best bet is, buy a new router, bridge your old router (bridging means setting the router to a mode in which it can't output a wifi signal anymore) and connect it up to a new router (which will be responsible for outputting the wifi signal and be responsible for holding all the information and stuff.

 

Personally I bought a tp-link archer a10, its an older router from them but it was on sale and miles better than my old hitron coda 4852 provided by rogers. I think I got it for around $125 usd since it was on sale.

 

If you do consider upgrading your router please do find the model number of the old one and look at the specs of it, specifically its memory capacity, cores, range, and all that. And compare this to the new router you are going to buy. CPU cores shouldn't matter too much as long as the new router has a better overall CPU BUT I just took that as a precaution since I live in a  2000+sqft house, and since my older router only had one CPU core which was being maxed out with our usage. 

 

Here's a snip of my current router usage as I type this message. This router is from 2015, a dual core, has dual band range, four total antennas and 128mb of ram. Newer ones tend to have more but, Even with 13 devices connected as of right now (an xbox, 5 laptops, 5 phones, 2 tv's) It's still sitting comfortably.

 

One thing I must say thought that this router only supports up to wifi 5 (wifi 6 is the new one) but if RAWWW SPEEEEDDS aren't an issue for you it should be fine. And additionally the archer a10 is on sale at a great price right now ( like $100 CAD which is $80 USD). If you want an older I guess you could say "midtier/flagship" router to solve your issues this would work good but if you really want something new don't sweat it. Just do the research right and it'll be good 🙂

I made an oopsie, so apparently on amazon it says this router is a single core but when looking at my personal tp-link router website it shows 2 cores there so, make sure you do some additional research to make sure the specs match up between different sources

Thank you all for your advice but the issue seems to be gone for now after restarting my pc and waiting for a few minutes because most of the people in the locality were using the same ISP at the same time then.
