Laptop GPU in desktop?

da na
Go to solution Solved by AlwaysFSX,

There are MXM to PCIe adapters for the removable dGPUs in laptops, but most are soldered to the motherboard anyways.

Is there an adapter to convert a laptop GPU to desktop? It would have to go in a PCIE x16 slot and have outputs built in.

Just wondering since I have a dead laptop, the CPU (and integrated graphics) died but the RX 560x is OK, wondering if I can use that.

Nope.

First of Notebook GPU's almost ALL of them are soldered onto the motherboard if not just part of it.
Also means the outputs are routed trough the motherboard of the notebook.

There are Notebooks with removable (I think it was MXM slot) GPU's, but also no outputs, since thats routed trough the slot also.

So you might get something working but not without a whole lot of tinkering.

They exist but only for gpus that are on MXM cards, and compatibility is all over the place.

MXM is not as universal as pcie. While you can put an RTX 3090 in a pcie 1.0 slot with a Pentium 4, or a 6600GT into a modern Z590 system, MXM sometimes wasn’t cross compatible between cards in the same product lineup. A lot of MXM compatibility relies on the system firmware which is usually really specific.
Not to get into the whole different MXM slot types and cooler mounting options and stuff

The GPU is removable and uses a MXM slot - I will try one of these adapters.

I would suggest trying one you can easily return, as what @8tgsaid they can be very specific. 😉

Goodluck!
