My friends mom sold his pc

Budget (including currency): 100-150 usd

Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: light gaming

Other details: My friend's mom waited until he moved in with his dad to sell his pc (she kept the money) . enthusiast level pc (9900k, 1070, etc). I wont get too far into the details but I am hoping to build him something to make up for the BS his mom pulled with his pc. I am trying to build something reasonably usable and cheap. I am thinking 6th or 7th gen intel if I get a good deal. possibly a xeon. LInks would be extremely helpful! I am not in a hurry as I never told him I am doing this.

You are absolutely not getting 6th or 7th gen for $150, especially in this market.

Your best bet is an old Sandy Bridge Optiplex (or X58 setup of some sort, if you're lucky) with a cheap GPU (RX 470/480/570/580) and some other small bits like an SSD and maybe RAM upgrade.

Quote me to see my reply!

Build aside, I hope his dad goes after mom for what is just being a thief. That behavior sounds suspect.

As for the build, $100-150 isn't really enough to build anything.

I am planning on possibly making a gofundme, if everyone else is as pissed as I am about it that budget could go up.

Optiplex 790 + a used GT 1030

I actually happen to have a leftover i7 for that socket so I might go that route

You might be able to save some money getting a really crappy LGA1155 optiplex then (like, pentium or celeron, and replacing the CPU), and have more of your budget left over for something like a GTX 1050? Or maybe those interesting mining GTX 1060s Linus reviewed. They sell on Aliexpress and have no video output, but you can configure the video to render on the dGPU and output through the iGPU in windows 10.

you can find an old workstation with that socket off ebay, then get an old GPU with whatever's left.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Heatsink: Gelid Phantom Black GPU: Palit RTX 3060 Ti Dual RAM: Corsair DDR4 2x8GB 3000Mhz mobo: Asus X570-P case: Fractal Design Define C PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 650W
