Fastest drive death you've encountered?

indrora

A bit of golfing:

Barring DOA drives, what's the fastest you've had a hard drive die?

Add a point for every month the drive survived.

Subtract 2 points each for:

  • High Capacity (8TB+)
  • High Speed (10kRPM)
  • Enterprise (Seagate Exos & Enterprise Capacity, WD Gold, HGST Enterprise)
  • Drive Eaters (controllers that you discover cause drives to fail)
  • Cascade failure (one drive failing causes another similar-age drive to fail due to increased usage)
  • "It's new, I swear" ("new" drive discovered to have had >1k hours on-time before you got it)
  • SMART full test said nothing was wrong but read error rate kept going up

Subtract 4 points each for:

  • Firmware fuck-up caused the drive death (for instance, HP enterprise drives)
  • Explosive and otherwise unusual failure modes
  • Data Recovery service discovered mysteries
  • Monkey's Paw/Butterfly Effect tier shit (environmental change causes a cascading failure)
  • Vendor says "No Problem Found"

Hole-in-zero is under 1 month before failure, but not DOA drive.

Negative scores win by default.

Standard par: 36 points (3 years of service)

Business par: 48 points (4 years of service)

Came up recently because I had a Seagate Ironwolf Pro drive go from 0 bad sector reads to every sector reading badly in a span of 6-8 months & just sent it in today to be RMA'd.

10TB Seagate Ironwolf that survived about a year and a half nets me a wonderful 16 points.

Had a flash drive from a 3-pack of them that I bought at Costco that was DOA. It was the one fucking color I wanted, too: green. But that doesn't count, so:

I had a 240GB PNY CS1111 SSD that I bought in November 2016 as an early Christmas gift die not even 15 months later in early February 2018.

Check out my guide on how to scan cover art here!

Does it count from its purchase date or when you received it?
Because I had a 1999 Seagate ST33232A Compaq that lasted awhile, but died within 4 months of me receiving it.

In a similar vein, my other 160GB Seagate drive from my iMac died in 5 months, though it was partially my fault - I knocked the iMac over while I was installing OS X.

Had a 250GB WD Blue last about 6 months before it started shitting pants and dumping bad sectors, so that puts me at a whole 6 points.

It now lives on as a water filled drive coaster.

I've also got a 1TB laptop Blue which started dumping bad sectors at around 170 hours but it's got enough reserved to still be used as a ShadowPlay/OBS drive with *usually* no video corruption.

I had a first gen OCZ RevoDrive pack it in after about a year and a half. No receipt meant no RMA. It was new when I bought it second hand from a crack head. Was insanely fast for its day, even though it let me down I look back in fondness.

Cheap 16gb sandisk flash drive that i bought to install windows on something died as soon as i got home and started burning the image. Literally lasted 10 minutes after taking it out of the packaging. I thought it was just defective, so I brought it back to the walmart i got it from and they gave me another one. Same thing, lasted 5 minutes instead. Didnt bother returning it the second time because it was $7. You get what you pay for.

I had an old WD10EADS Green 1tb drive made around 2009, it got used as a download destination for its entire lifespan 24/7 and it died just recently after 10 years, 226 days of power on hours. i know some people think seagate dm series are unreliable as well after 7200.14. i elaborate on the subjects here.

Many 2.5 inch 1TB HDD died after about 8 months of usage. I think this is something that Louis Rossman reported, where the read write head scrape off the surface of the platter.
