Does XMP profile not work when all 4 ram slots are filled?

Hi,

I recently built  new system

Ryzen 5600x

Aorus elite X570 Mobo

and a single 8gb corsair RGB pro 3600 Ram

I got a single stick because of budget constraints and I want to add 3 sticks later.

 

Recently when I tried setting the XMP profile it didn't work and the ram was running at 2666Mhz. and in some forum it said to change the slot from A1 to A2 which worked.

When I put the RAM in A2 slot it got ran at 3600Mhz. so there are two slots A2 and B2 in which XMP profile works and in other two it doesn't.

So my question is in future if I add 3 more ram sticks will it run at 3600Mhz or the lowered one?

It depends, mileage can vary with a mem OC regardless of whether or not all 4 slots are filled and XMP/DOCP profiles are not always stable. When you go buy more RAM make sure the part number is identical to the stick you already have. It would be likely that you would have to manually clock your memory in order for it to run stable at 3200MHz+, luckily it is not that hard.

I actually tried manually over clocking the ram at slot A1 didn't work with this mother board. frequency was at 2666Mhz no matter what I did. Changed slots and then i was able to over clock.

this is very true i have 2 sets of geil super luce and one set will not hold xmp 3200 its only goes to 2800 i bought the sets about a month apart and they do have different part numbers

your mobo might have a problem then

Have your run MemTest86?

 

When you manually clocked your memory what was your SOC and DRAM voltage set to?

And even if the the PN is the same if bought separately it still could have issues.

I haven't tried MemTest86. will check this.

This is actually my first build. I wasn't aware of these ram compatibility issues. I figured I can upgrade the ram slowly later.

In my head it was more like the ram stick says 3600mhz, you put that in and you get 3600mhz.

Set SOC to 1.100V, and you can safely push DRAM Voltage as high as 1.450V, beyond that is not recommended. I recommend trying increments of +0.250V for DRAM voltage.

It doesn't really work like that. The RAM sticks says that it can do so if the motherboard and memory controller on the processor allow for it. However not all motherboards and processors are created equal. That is why there is a QVL for pretty much any consumer motherboard out there. What is listed in the QVL is validated by the motherboard manufacturer as working. In the QVL you will also find that some memory configurations are supported only in a single, dual or quad dim configuration. For example, a kit that may work perfectly in a single channel configuration, might not work in a dual channel config.
