What does Clearing CMOS do?

I'm getting a new cooler and wanted to reset fan curves, etc. So I was wondering if clearing CMOS will reset my drives, etc

CMOS just resets your BIOS settings, which are a set of values that tell your hardware at what speeds they should run (which includes fans). If you never changed anything in the BIOS to begin with, feel free to clear the CMOS. it will tell you to enter setup on the next boot, just do it, then press the power button to turn it off again and then start it normally after that.

Basic Input Output System, well basically it's a system controlling your motherboard not the whole system only the MB.

The values are things like CPU settings, memory speed settings, HDD settings etc, which is the settings again for the motherboard to talk to those components.

These values usually set automatically at first instalment, you can tweak this setting for your liking.

If you reset these values, it will run the auto settings.

 

Example say if you have a 3700mhz processors it will set the speed to 37x100mhz, later you upgrade to 4000, the pc may not run as it uses 37x. you need to reset the settings so it can run the new cpu.

I had another question, does clearing CMOS values clear values set with ryzen master and afterburner??

no those values are set in the operating system, your BIOS and CMOS settings are loaded before the OS loads clearing the CMOS will just revert your MB back to defaults its great for when you're doing an OC and it doesn't post, you then clear the CMOS and bam back to default and you can try again no har no foul.
