R5 3600 vs i5 10400 software use

Just curious if the r5 3600 would be a better value if the computer will mainly be used for running multiple programs for school and work? With some gaming after? Price in Canada currently is about 280$ for R5 3600 vs about 220 for the 10400..

unless you're making money on it, the differences aren't meaningful. The cheaper one is the better one most often.

That said, the 3600 probably is faster at productivity software, unless whatever you're doing can utilize quicksync, in that case, the intel.

What kind of programs? If its basic productivity and web browser stuff both will be great, so go with the cheaper option for CPU+MOBO. The 10400 is locked, so you’ll be limited to its stock boost clock. Also, if you go with a lower end mobo on intel, which makes sense with the 10400, you’ll be stuck with slower RAM speeds which might impact performance. You might be able to find a good deal on a last gen 9700k, which is the way I would go if I was going to build Intel.

If I could get a 3600 for 220 on aliexpress would that also be a good option? Looking for a mobo with wifi and AMD4 seems to have better prices.. lots of wifi sticks I see around 30$.. so might as well buy a better motherboard instead of a cheaper mobo and a wifi stick

If prices are the same, the 3600 is better. If motherboard selection is better priced for the featureset you want, then even a small markup on the 3600 might be worthwhile.

I wouldn’t go with ali express for the 3600. You risk getting scammed and shipping takes forever. You can always pickup a used 3600 off craigslist if you want a discount. Just make sure that you see it working and check for bent pins. You’re also right to want to get a better motherboard instead of adding functionality to it later. I recommend MSI or Gigabyte and I’ve heard that ASrock is good for budget builds. I have had pretty bad experiences with Asus so I can’t personally recommend it. X470 and B450 are a good way to save money on the cost of the motherboard. Just make sure the X470/450 board don’t cost more than a comparable B550 mobo. I don’t see any real reason to go with X570 right now.
