Should I really be upgrading the CPU? how much of a performance hit will I be missing?

I think this out of stock fiasco wash over my hell bent desire to upgrade. Don't get me wrong, I'm still obsessing and dying to upgrade my gpu, but that is because I want to be able to play newer and more demanding games on higher settings. However for cpu and mobo, I don't want to do it just because I can. I don't want to be wasteful like that. So, I have an i5 8400, if(and it's a big if or probably when) I get either a 6800 xt/3080, will it bottleneck? and by how much?

To be precise, my question is more on "how many fps on a gpu's performance will I lose by pairing 6800 xt/3080 with an i5 8400", rather than "how many fps I will gain by getting a better cpu", or this a weird question? Anyway thanks in advance.

What resolution are you playing at/what games?

At 4K in cinematic games, an 8400 would be pretty balanced for a 3080. At 1080p in competitive shooters, the 8400 would hold you back pretty significantly.

Hard to give an accurate estimate, better to look at your display because if it's 1080p 60hz you won't see any appreciable difference.

I'm currently on 1080p 165hz monitor but will change to 1440p 144hz or 165hz once I get a new gpu. I do play fps games moderately and a lot of AAA titles on backlog(why do we buy great games and never play them). I don't want to stay with 1080p as it would be meaningless to go with 6800 xt/3080 or 4k, as I want more than 100 fps if possible and it is expensive, so will go with the 1440p.
