Could my 500w PSU handle a 3070 until I could upgrade?

Managed to get my hands on a 3070, and against all common sense I am wondering if my 500w PSU could get away with it for awhile until I can purchase a 650w PSU.

 

Threw everything in a PCPartPicker list and the estimated wattage seemed to be under 500, but I still dont want to bork my new GPU I just shelled out a bit more than I was comfortable on

 

Is the risk of bricking my GPU enough that I should steer clear of it completely?

Yes, ull be fine, so long as ur not overclocking.

 

The manufacturers recommended PSU size is always way over the top.

Not a chance at all. That is a very low end psu and that 3070 is gonna overload it easily.

Even a 10900k system with a 3070 only barely pulls 400w, so ull be fine.

i honestly dont think its even possible to brick a gpu by having a psu that cant meet the demands of the gpu, if the psu isnt defective then the worse thing that will happen is that you system will shut down

you can always turn down the power limit on the gpu if you need to as well

with decent 500w psu sure. With BR no. Group regulated and DF. not good for rtx 3000 series.

Motherboard tier list. Tier A for overclocking 5950x. Tier B for overclocking 5900x, Tier C for overclocking 5800X. Tier D for overclocking 5600X. Tier F for 4/6 core Cpus at stock. Tier E avoid.

(Also case airflow matter or if you are using Downcraft air cooler)

( You can overclock Tier C just fine, but it can get very loud, that is why it is not recommended for overclocking, same with tier D)

it'll probably work, but it's defenately not an ideal scenario.

Using what to measure?

 

Consumer level products don't measure the power spikes that these Ampere cards are capable of.
