Let’s begin with the breakup. Under the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act, Tumblr, YouTube, Reddit, WordPress, and Facebook aren’t responsible for the copyright infringement of each of their millions of users, so long as they take down specific posts, videos, or images when notified by copyright holders. But copyright holders thought that wasn’t good enough. They wanted to take down whole websites, not just particular posts, and without ever going to court. In 2011, they proposed a bill that would let them do just that.

It was called SOPA.

I wonder what would happen if large websites stopped using American based payment systems, and relocated to Europe? Do you think that would make a noticeable difference in the US revenue?

Don't get me wrong, we should fight this, but it's not a surprise that it's back. That's not how the Government passes bills.

They try a cut down version to see if it will pass that is made so they can abuse it later but it seems good as it is. But the internet is smart and said "No, screw that." 

Then they proceed to change it ever so slightly while renaming it (I believe PIPA was this to SOPA) and attach it to other bills of more moral importance like "Save the puppies" (made up obviously) so that no one can fight it without fighting something that they want to succeed. 

And if, somehow, it still doesn't pass, if they really want it, they will repeat that process until it passes. No matter how long it takes. Until something bigger takes it's place (i.e. a big war breaks out), in which case, they will pass it hiding it within the bills they want to pass for whatever is more important so no one notices it.

Vietnam was absolutely full of that kind of crap.

It is conniving at best and evil at worst, but it's how the Government is run. And it's terrible all around.

Something like this is inevitable. Governments will take control of internet sooner or later. Yeah maybe another alternative will pop-out for people who care but mainstream majority will stay.

 

If didn't know any better I would have some hope for the future as this might lead to a better world through defining and regulating the rights of internet companies like Facebook and Google, so that we have a basis in law when we ask for Facebook to delete all our info or determine what can Google collect about us... but this is the USA! Number one priority is the interests of corporations. I'm sure they'll find a compromise that all the big companies agree upon.

well seeing how the US Government is giving up control of the internet the only people who will gain are the copyright holders, and the number of people against this bill outnumber the people who support it

There is no way that this would pass. Closing websites like youtube and social networks hurts the whole world. This also would put way to many people out of jobs. There is no way this will ever pass. Some people don't realize how much they themselves rely on these websites.
