How long does Thermal Compound stay "good"?

broccoli27

Hi guys,

I'm about to use up the last milligrams of the thermal grease that I have and I'm already considering to buy some new mx-4.

I was thinking about how many grams I should buy. I bought 4g in 2017 and now its almost empty.

Should I go for more than 4g this time so that I'll have it for more than 3 years or will the quality degrade to a point that the value of buying more thermal compund at once is not worth the performance loss?

Does anyone have expierince with this?

Do you know an article or video about this topic?

To be clear: I'm not talking about the Thermal Grease on a CPU or GPU, but rather it still being unused in the syringe.

Please tell me if there is anything that is unclear in my question.

Newer pastes on the market will always pop up here and there (there are already ones better than MX-4) and longevity will depend largely on the storage condition. All in all, I would recommend a small amount of high quality paste, as the price per application is not so high anyway even with a small tube of Kryonaut.

I had a tube of mx-2 I lost around 2014 and when found I used it up in 2020 so really storing stuff well keeps it good for a long time.

As long as it hasn’t separated it should still be ok. If you squeeze some out and a bunch of juice comes out first and then paste it’s no good.
