Im getting the lg 4k 144hz monitor im not sure whether to get a display port 1.2 or 1.4 cable ?

4K 144Hz requires Displayport 1.3 or higher,  but keep in mind there isn't really a displayport cable "version" type, they are suppose to be rated by their transmission speed; which you need 32Gb/s or higher.

Just get a good quality cable, which may be advertised as "1.4 compatible" or whatever.

EDIT: oh and check if the monitor doesn't come with a cable.

As @minibois said, DP cables to not have a version. The pin-layout never changed. The difference is the material, thickness and insulation of the individual wires.

A good quality DP port cable will support all standards without any issues. Cheap cables will always work, but can lead to intermittent signal loss or artifacts.

This is the same for HDMI cables.

Lol go ask Wendell over at L1 about the knock-off Amazon Basics DP cables that are straight-up not functioning most of the time, and if they do "work", it's not really working well enough to consider usable.

You have to understand what "work" means in this case. The signal is being transfered just fine, but not over the distance you might want it to.
It's comparable to thunderbolt in this sense, where even USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 cables can support Thunderbolt 3 over very short distances.

The solution is always the same tho: Buy good quality cables.
