Work System for a colleague

A1200

Mainly for work, but stuck a fair gfx card in there just in case - you never know when we might need some 3D modelling lol. I know the exhaust fan a focused flow model from Noctua but I had it spare, and once the air is out, who cares how its being blown out hey? System runs nice. The i7 9700f is being limited in turbo'ing on more cores by the motherboard but again we had this in stock. For the utility of the machine this won't be a problem for some time by which time I will be able to buy a Z390 for £50! :)

The specs:

CPU: Intel i7 9700f
Motherboard: Gigabyte H310M S2H 2.0
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 3000MHz CL15
GPU: ASUS Dual Series GeForce GTX1660 Super 6GB GDDR6 EVO
Case: Cooler Master MasterBox E500L Blue
Storage (OS) Samsung 860 Evo 1TB M.2 SSD / (Data) Samsung 860 EVO 2TB
PSU: Corsair RM550x 80 PLUS Gold 550W
Display: LG 27MK600M-B 27" IPS Monitor
Cooling: Noctua NH-U9S (dual fan config) + 1x 120mm & 1x 140mm Noctua case Fans
Keyboard: MS Wired 600 Desktop
Mouse: MS Wired 600 Desktop
Sound: Onboard HD Audio
Operating System: Win 10 Pro 64 Bit

(yes I know its UBM but its quick, standalone and I don't care lol)

  • 2 months later...

So it was bothering me that the i7 9700F would never be used to its full potential with that H310 board - the power delivery just isn't there not to mention any other handicaps with the chipset. So I asked my friend if we could put in a Z390 board and he said I could. I also had a 64GB Kit which I couldn't fit in my system when using a NH-D15 as it was too high so I replaced his RAM too. Finally I added an Asus PCE-AC51 wifi card which seems to work well during testing.

I could have continued upgrading. For example the new motherboard can support M.2 NVME at higher speeds instead so I could have replaced the M.2 SATA drive but by the time I had done a data transfer etc. it would have taken me ages and the mission here wasn't drive speed, it was to unleash the true CPU performance. The drives are plenty quick enough.

So here are the new specs:

CPU: Intel i7 9700F
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z390 UD
RAM: 64GB HyperX Predator 3000 MHz DDR4 CL15 (4x 16GB)
GPU: ASUS Dual Series GeForce GTX1660 Super 6GB GDDR6 EVO
Case: Cooler Master MasterBox E500L Blue
Storage (OS) Samsung 860 Evo 1TB M.2 SSD / (Data) Samsung 860 EVO 2TB
PSU: Corsair RM550x 80 PLUS Gold 550W
Display: LG 27MK600M-B 27" IPS Monitor
Cooling: Noctua NH-U9S (dual fan config) + 1x 120mm & 1x 140mm Noctua case Fans
Keyboard: MS Wired 600 Desktop
Mouse: MS Wired 600 Desktop
Sound: Onboard HD Audio
Operating System: Win 10 Pro 64 Bit

I did a new userbenchmark run just to see if the CPU was hitting higher in the  percentiles and indeed it now is: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/38688273

Workstation level performance for sure. A nice upgrade.
