CPU temperature dangerous for my computer?

Previous Post:

Posted 02 March 2014 - 02:34 AM

I was playing "Rust" for a long stretch of time, and i started to get this horrible lag where i could not do a single thing.

I alt tabbed out, and closed rust, and my skype connection was really buggy, scratchy, and not exactly right.

I closed skype; it stopped, and i checked my cpu temp. It reached 77 degrees! [on "core temp"]

I just built this computer again from an RMA, but i only RMAed my board, and video card.

Specs:

Cooler master haf922 {added side fan-fan blowing in}

CPU I5-3570k {stock cooler]

msi gtx 660 ti

Good cpu thermal compound.

Idling around 44 degrees core one 38 degrees core four.

For the past two days i have been worrying about if my cpu is acting right, but i am not sure. This is outta of the normal, and as been only acting like this since a got my recent RMA. A year ago, my temps would only maybe get 70, and only on a really large load, but now they shoot to 70 like nothing! Even reach 77 at one point, made my system really slow and buggy when it did reach it.

I have been playing a variety of games, and all act the same temperature wise, besides rust; which runs a little hotter than most game, but i figure it because it's a cpu heavy game.

If i turn Skype, open broadcast, play music, or do anything else really when playing a game; the cpu will start heating up fast.

I have a HAF cooler master 922, with the side fan installed

Can the side fan be causing this?

Did i put the cpu cooler on wrong?

Did i put paste on wrong? I spreaded it out with a screw driver

Notice!!!

Look how it now says i have a Genuine intel processor now; instead of the original i5 on the picture a week ago.

Have you considered a better cooler to keep the temps down?

I have a evo 212, but have not installed it. I fear installing it because i don't want to break my computer, and install it wrong. I think having a simple fan is better. I have had way better temps with the stock cooler, and this is happening recently

Put on the 212 evo, it will keep it cooler and it's not hard to install, and the chances of you breaking something are pretty low. If having cooler temps helps than you will have found your problem.

You spread the thermal paste with a screwdriver? Generally the most recommended method is to put a half-pea sized blob on the middle of the CPU and let the mounting pressure of the cooler spread it out.

I would consider those temps to be pretty normal for a stock cooler, because stock coolers are never any good. There's a damn good reason why many of us invest in aftermarket coolers.

Edit: Put on the 212 EVO if you have one sitting around!! What are you waiting for?!?! (also, once you have the 212 evo installed, overclock your CPU.)

Well then the paste does not cover all of the heat sink, so what would be the point of good thermal paste, if it has not been applied to the whole side of the metal shield on the CPU. The paste is meant to cover the scratches, and micro holes on the shield, but either way work!

Your OP is terrible for people with the dark theme...

77 degrees is perfectly fine though.

Afraid of breaking it, and one of the nuts for the back plate, came unthreaded! Very disappointing, because i was excited to use it at the time, and it's still holding me back.

Would i get a better performance oc'ing my CPU? I heard i would get like a 1% difference haha.

A little thermal paste goes a long way because.. Even a blob as small as one or two grains of rice can cover pretty much the entire surface of the CPU's heatspreader.

Also, the large metal square that you see is only the heatspreader, not the CPU. The CPU chip itself is only a small rectangle under the middle of the heatspreader.

Edit: A 15% overclock will give you 15% more processing power.. If you use applications that can utilize the extra power, they could run up to 15% faster (theoretically).. Since you've already paid for the cooler, overclocking is free performance. Why wouldn't you do it?

just put the hyper 212 evo on, it wont break your computer. just follow the instructions and it'll work. the temperatures will be lower than before.

Performance per clock is improving massively every new generation thanks to IPC improvements. You cant compare overclocks results from 5 year old cpu's with the current ones.

Also to add the intel stock cooler is fine, theyre made to keep the temps below 70° but the problem with them is the pre-applied paste. It dries out after a few months. Also 77° isn't harmful for your cpu, I'm gaming somewhere between 70-75° so it isnt a problem but I bet you get higher temps down the line as usual..

If you want to overclock you're going to need to install your evo 212, you don't have to take your motherboard out to install the backplate because your case has a cutout (http://cdn.erodov.net/portal//reviews/cabinet/haf-922/haf-922-14.jpg). Just type in youtube: "techquickie cpu cooler install" he shows there how to install and remove it & then just google a 212 evo tutorial.

Put on the cooler, use the grain of rice method (or whichever method you subscribe to).

The temps sound like a mix of a bad seat, and using the stock cooler.

Yes, whoever told you 1% didn't know their subject matter.

You can get a massive difference with overclocking.

Well... My stock cooler is rated for 45 watts max, and I'm dumping almost 90 into it, and still haven't hit 45C with the fan goin 1500RPM... Only time it goes past that is with the in-place large FFTs (think that's the one I'm thinking of), and that puts unrealistic load on it.

And to the OP, get yourself a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO and some of the really nice Noctua thermal compound (I think it's NH-T1 or something like that). And make sure it's mounted properly.

For stock cooler 77C under load is actually not that bad. A dangerous temp would be 10C more as in 85C+. So no worries. FPS lag can be caused by so much more than overheating.

Yeah I agree with the last two posts. However, I would also recommend tacking on that aftermarket cooler. The above answers are great. That's how you're gonna make sure that the bond between the CPU heat spreader and the heatsink works efficiently--without any pesky air bubbles hindering the transfer of heat.
