Games crashing and no idea why

peepoo

I recently made a pc with a Ryzen 2600, RX 5600 XT and 16gb of ram.
I installed my first game (Minecraft) and it ran well. It had a few crashes to windows, but they were really rare so I didn't think about it too much
I installed Astroneer from Microsoft store and it crashed to windows on start-up or mid-game, I didn't think about it too much since the game has some bugs and people have had this problem (and i didnt bother to fix it)
I installed Fortnite (shut up) and I would barely make it past start-up.

Note : I never got BSOD
My friend recommended to set a frame cap in the Radeon software, and I finally could actually run those games, though, crashes would still happen. Less often though.

I also get random freezes, the screen goes black or flickers, and then im back to normal. Sometimes when this happens, it has the message "default radeon wattman settings have been applied due to an unexpected system failure"

I am using Radeon 20.9.1 and have tried 20.9.2 and got the same results

What can I do to fix the constant crashing?

Do you change the wattman settings at all? (like auto oc?)

I could use some help with this!

please, pm me if you would like to contribute to my gpu bios database (includes overclocking bios, stock bios, and upgrades to gpus via modding)

Only fan curve. And graphics card is factory oc

GPU tdp = 150w = 225w for factory oc under load

CPU tdp = 65w   =  80w under load

MOBO = 50w = 75w under load

other = 50w = 50w load

GT of 325w idle and 430w under load

Its possible the psu cannot supply enough wattage. whats the gpu pluged in with? Daisy chain or dual pcie power?

Is the one straight from the psu the dual pcie?
I think its the pcie power

if its one cable for 2 ports its daisy chain pcie power, if its two cables its dual pcie power.

its good. I think it might be a psu problem, where not enough watts get to the gpu. I would get a 550w or higher if you want to get a new one.

The thing is, it's only games that are crashing. I ran furmark and I got no crashes. is it still possible its power supply?

Those kinds of crashes are common when a GPU is not stable (like when it's overclocked). If it came like this out of box then you could RMA it assuming you haven't done any overclocking yourself.

Your power supply is only 450 watts and you are gaming with a GPU that recommends 550 Watts. That is the first red flag I noticed immediately, so you should get a beefier power supply first and see if that works.

First thing that came to mind before viewing this post is the PSU being underrated.
I think you should invest in a decent 750w PSU.

RAM could also be an issue, perhaps run Memtest (memtest.org) to check RAM stability.
If Memtest is failing, try dropping down the performance of the RAM to standard/relaxed speeds in the BIOS.

Logi MX KEYS - high quality low profile membrane keyboard  - perfect for gaming imo 🙂

If I couldn't get a beefier PSU, is there some other way I could decrease power consumption to my gpu safely to make it stable?

Well, I guess you can try under volting and down clocking your GPU in the Radeon software. Not sure how much that would help, and it would decrease performance if nothing else since its not working as hard. I'm sure you didn't spend all that money to get less than what you paid for. I'd just get a better power supply and call it a day, assuming its not crashing because of bad ram or something.

I will get another PSU soon but I wanted to know if there was anything I could do in the mean time.

I have ran memtest86 and the results showed no errors

So you tested each stick individually with memtest86? Well, then yeah, you could try down clocking and under volting the GPU in the meantime. Not sure if reducing the graphics settings would help, but I assume it would, makes sense.

Bad card? Bad overclock? Bad drivers? Overheating?

Run DDU and install the latest drivers version. If that still doesn't work run DDU again and install an older version.

Do you have another graphics card you could test with?

Card is factory overclocked, I havent touched a thing
I keep the card under 60°C

I tried driver version 20.1.3 and the crashes still happen
I don't have second graphics card to swap with

You can definitely try undervolting and downclocking your GPU, in best case performance doesn't even decrease and even if it did it can't be too bad also for testing purposes it would be the next logical step imo.

I'd start with downclocking, like 20% or something and see about any changes.

If 3dmark and others also crash and you know its a psu issue, try to find a computer store where they'll actually let you test a new psu before buying it. so you can see it working before biting the bullet
