i5-9400

The advertised boost clock for my chip is 4.1 ghz, but i a only hitting 3.89. Am i doing something wrong or is there a way to increase my boost clock.

The 4.1Ghz is only if you use one core:

If you got a overclock mobo you can boost all the cores to 4.1ghz...if not 3.89 is plenty imho.

The i5 9400 is a locked cpu. If he had a Z series motherboard, it would and should have the same boost behaviour. At least I think so.

You would need to run a program that only runs on a single core, which could probably be done by finding a program that uses your CPU a lot and only allowing 1 thread to work for that program. 

Open the program you have in mind (like a CPU benchmark), go into Task Manager > Details and find the program, Set Affinity and only tick one of the threads. Now run the program and check the speed.

 

But ~3.9Ghz is the normal all-core boost for the CPU: https://en.wikichip.org/wiki/intel/core_i5/i5-9400

this CPU has a locked multiplier though, how is OP going to overclock that?

this CPU has a locked multiplier though, how is OP going to overclock that?

Enable all-core boost...just have all cores running at 4.1...technically it's not overclocking.  Maybe some non-OC mobos will allow you to do this ?  I forget things...

i dont think thats how that works, most you can do is remove the power limits so that it would stay at the standard all core boost instead of throttling back to normal tdp

basically everything was bought used off of reddit or here, only new component was the case. absolutely nutty deals for some of these parts, ill have to tally it all up once it's "done" :D
