problems with my seasonic psu fan

VeganJoy

in the process of moving my parts from my meshify to a real case, ive had everything splayed out on my shelf. in doing so ive noticed that the fan on my prime ultra titanium 750w isnt working, and pressing the little hybrid switch doesnt help. it should automatically spin up the fan at 50% load so i put my 980ti of furmark pulling 360w and my 3600 on p95 pulling 90w, so probably about 500w for the system and it still didnt turn on. soooooo is there anything dumb ive missed or should i conclude that the fan is dead and return it?

topics i need help on:

Spoiler

my "oops i bought intel right before zen 3 releases" build

CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 (placeholder)

GPU: Gigabyte 980ti Xtreme (also placeholder), deshroud w/ generic 1200rpm 120mm fans x2, stock bios 130% power, no voltage offset: +70 core +400 mem

Memory: 2x16gb GSkill Trident Z RGB 3600C16, 14-15-30-288@1.45v

Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix X570-E Gaming

Cooler: Noctua NH-D15S w/ white chromax bling
OS Drive: Samsung PM981 1tb (OEM 970 Evo)

Storage Drive: XPG SX8200 Pro 2tb

Backup Storage: Seagate Barracuda Compute 4TB

PSU: Seasonic Prime Ultra Titanium 750W w/ black/white Cablemod extensions
Case: Fractal Design Meshify C Dark (to be replaced with a good case shortly)

basically everything was bought used off of reddit or here, only new component was the case. absolutely nutty deals for some of these parts, ill have to tally it all up once it's "done" :D

Titanium PSU's are very efficient. Even at 500W, you're looking at 25 W or so of dissipation. It might simply not be getting hot enough to turn on the fan.

Main: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D, Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti, 16 GB 4400 MHz DDR4 Fedora 38 x86_64

Secondary: AMD Ryzen 5 5600G, 16 GB 2667 MHz DDR4, Fedora 38 x86_64

Server: AMD Athlon PRO 3125GE, 32 GB 2667 MHz DDR4 ECC, TrueNAS Core 13.0-U5.1

Home Laptop: Intel Core i5-L16G7, 8 GB 4267 MHz LPDDR4x, Windows 11 Home 22H2 x86_64

Work Laptop: Intel Core i7-10510U, NVIDIA Quadro P520, 8 GB 2667 MHz DDR4, Windows 10 Pro 22H2 x86_64

yeah thats why i figure i havent had any issues lol. its certainly a bit hot though and turning the hybrid mode on and off (off forces the fan to spin at all times, at least its supposed to) doesnt turn on the fan, whereas it does on my px 750 and prime ultra 550w.

The fan should spin when it's not in hybrid mode.

Also, most psus spin a bit on bootup even when it's on hybrid mode (my Corsair does, but IDK about Seasonic, does your other Seasonics spin on bootup?).

so... that might be a fan problem.

Ya I see your problem now, mine spins for a second when I press the power button. If yours doesn't then your fan is might be broken.

The fan should always spin when hybrid mode is off.

so it seems, i shall see if i can return it. i dont fault the psu for the issue as its secondhand, but i was wondering what some alternatives to the seasonic prime series are. is there such thing as the "best" psu or do these premium titanium units all hit about the same level of quality?

The 80+ rating is just for efficiency. It says nothing about how good the PSU is. The Prime Titanium uses a crappy fan and lacks multi rail OCP, and Seasonic units seem to have issues with GPU transients (so basically higher end GPUs). If you want a good PSU, then just get an actually good PSU, and ignore the efficiency.

i know the rating is generally separate from quality, but i was under the impression that the prime/prime ultra were pretty good? what would be a better choice in the ~200 dollar range?

Ran my RTX 2080Ti FTW3 Ultra off my Prime Ultra Ti 750W for 1 1/2 years with no issues..... And the 1080Ti FTW3 before that..

And it's currently running the GTX 1080Ti FTW3 again...... Same, no issues.

Just saying..

As far as I know in seasonic the fan profile based on temp.

that why in the charts its wattage against sound/RPM in 25C.

I mean its all true.........

Well we know old focus and current Prime trip on high transiense GPUs.

And current focus is suspects.

While good at singlerail units. The fans arent great and sadly prime trips fairly easily on ampere.
