Summary

Oculus quest 2, standalone VR headset specs have been leaked by accident by facebook today. The new headset will have significantly better processor (snapdragon xr2), higher resolution display and is significantly lighter than the predecessor. The price of the new headset has not been leaked, we'll have to wait till facebook connect event on wednesday for that.

My thoughts

I can't wait for the release of oculus quest 2, I've been using the quest 1 for over a year and it's been great. I never expected the quest 2 to have so much better processor. I'm curious if the rumored 300$ price tag is true, we'll have to wait till wednesday.

They'll probably even be banned in germany as it is illegal for them to share ANY data between their services there. Which always tends to trickle down to the rest of europe in laws. I wonder what their response will be to that as in the past they've tried many tricks but ended up getting a far harsher punishment due to that.

That's the whole point, if you need a facebook account to use it then it is facebook and not oculus anymore so they get around the sharing issue.

Kinda surprised this pretty much went under the radar with nobody talking about it.

I've seen a few videos on early headsets and it seems to be a nice cheap VR headset that you can plug on the PC with the Link cable, even more so considering how they are apparently phasing out the Rift S and focusing on the Quest lineup.

 

Personally, the whole facebook login thing... while I don't really want to give FB my data... it's not like we're not giving our data hand over fist to pretty much every big companies out there in the first place. How is Valve better than FB to have our Data? Or Google? Heck, just make a fake facebook account, don't add any friends/family to it and just use it for Oculus stuff, ain't hard.

 

I've wanted a VR headset for a while and the Index looks to be the "greatest" one, especially the controller... But I can't do the lighthouses thing on my walls, I just can't. Don't have the space for them nor the power plugs and I'm not about to invest hundreds of dollars in cable concealing tubes or passing the cables through the walls in an attempt to make it look not as ugly as it would be in my tiny ass room, somehow.

So the Quest 2 is basically the only viable alternative for me right now, since it doesn't require lighthouses and is wireless so I can go in another room if I wanted to, etc...

burner fb account, and it's not like i use FB so targeted ads dont really affect me

as a consumer, cost plays a major factor

 

how much does a index cost again?

wireless module? or a single type C connection?

 

FB link is off putting but idk if it's worth paying 3-4x the cost to avoid it

As someone who's in the market for a VR headset the Quest 2 is a no go for me now.  I deleted my Facebook account 5 years ago for a reason.

I am a consumer. It doesn't matter as much as the message it's sending. I get there are sheep that won't care and just conform, I'm not one of them.

It's shit. If you don't have access to Facebooks servers it doesn't work and you can't play games.

And loosing that access is as easy as breaking the ever changing Facebook Community Standards even off the platform. And that ban means real ban, you get banned, you loose your HMD, not only access to your games on your account but the access to the whole HMD.

Not to mention that it took only weeks from release the info about forcing Oculus users to use their Facebook account for Facebook to renew parts of the Oculus ToS and behold!

Even I, as a person who really dislikes Facebook and will never get anything from them and basicly treat them as a cancer, expected inside-out tracking data to be collected and used by a Facebook in the coming years, not this soon. Like I kind of knew that at some point someone will turn the inside-out tracking to be a data collecting goldmine, but Facebook actually getting permission for that already? You except them to be bad and they turn out to be a lot worse.

 

At this point I am so happy that I didn't get Rift and opted out from getting anything from Facebook and was so left with the OG Vive and only got upgrade to Index Controllers and only because I find inside-out tracking to be garbage compared to lighthouse tracking. I wouldn't really mind Facebooks spying because they probably do it anyway and there's a ton of bigger players doing even worse spying and they don't even ask permission. But that part where your 10 years old post saying some word that just now turns out to be next bad word for some minority rendering your 400-500€ headset the worst paperweight (because it's light). Yeah, at least I don't even actually need to run newest Steam client or even the actual Steam client to use my headset and no matter how hard Valve bans me my old AF headset doesn't turn out to be a paperweight.

From looking that up, while they do say that in their terms, that seems to have been a myth.

There no credible story of anyone having had their headset hardware banned at any point in time for any length of time.

Some stories did pop up on reddit, but were soon found to be made up just to scare pirates from pirating VR games.

 

I believe that's basically in there to say "well, we did our part so we can't be held responsible for anything the user do".

Did you read the Road to VR article about this?

Reddit is reddit, almost as bad as the 4chan in the glory days, rumors running left and right and at the same time other rumors debunking them.

It is not about someone already getting that punishment but that kind of "punishment" even been considered and being mentioned possible. Hopefully no one ever gets it, no matter how bad person they are or whatever they have done, but personally I will avoid Facebook headsets like cancer just because their first response to the question: "Is it possible for a person to loose their ability to use their headset if they get banned?" being anything else than "No".

That's against their TOS and they do close fake accounts, have several friends who had some that lost them.

Obviously they don't say, just that they detect "inauthentic behavior". In the case of my friends it was just too obviously fake name. If you use "John Doe" as name you're pretty sure the account will get blocked and would have to send your ID to get it reopened if you were actually named that.

While VR headsets like the Index are certainly great. They cost as much as a new PC. Then there's the lighthouses, that you need space to set up and plug into the wall (more cables everywhere!).

The Quest 2 start at $299 USD / $399 CAD (for 64GB... Which really, if you want it for PC VR with Link, it's enough) 
The Index cost $999 USD, $1319 CAD. Over 3 times as much.

 

If it means creating a fake ID to get a fake account on Facebook for a cheap VR headset, it's good enough for me. To me, it's no worse than having to login to a Google account on my phone, or Microsoft pushing their crap on Windows 10.

 

Personally I was going to buy the Index(even if there was a 2 month waiting period after ordering it on Steam).
I didn't care much for the price. Then I remembered the lighthouses and the little space of my room.
I would need to bring my entire PC to the living room whenever I wanted to play VR. With the Quest 2, I can just play wirelessly if I need more space and no lighthouses. Sure it introduce extra latency, but it's still playable for games that are not super fast paced.

Quest 2 is cheap but then again it is Facebook, their literal bread and butter is collecting all the data and selling all that data to whoever wants it and you now have multiple cameras made to scan your surroundings strapped to your head. If it was any other company (excluding Google) there is at least some hope they are not really that much interested in the data they can get from the HMDs because their main business is elsewhere (HP, Samsung, Lenovo - Selling other stuff, Valve - Selling Steam, HTC - Selling headsets and doing research for Valve) but with Facebook, I really wouldn't be surprised if they were giving Quests away for free, even less if they sell them on loss, to just get people to use them to get more data and data that they have never ever been able to get.

But I can understand that, who would want to get the majority to know that Facebook is killing PCVR off and moving to walled garden because... Well they really didn't give any reasons. They are killing the Rift line completely, Rift S is the last one and that's it, Oculus Store on PC will be merged to Quest Store to unify their storefront (Carmack was nice enough to point out that it's better user interface but general tone was it is done because they cannot compete even with Viveport and shit is flying towards them because they are the only one who only support their own products, also that just any dev cannot get their stuff to Quest Store). So, more or less with Facebook it is only a question of time until even the link cable is killed off and they go full mobile.

 

If money isn't problem and you really want inside-out tracking, well you are in luck because you actually have more choices than with lighthouses. Reverb G2 is just around the corner, Odyssey is still pretty good if you can live with a bit haze, HTC has VIve Cosmos (and elite) and the rest of the WMR devices out there. If you want wireless then your options drop to 4 choices: Facebook Quest/Quest 2 or HTC Vive Cosmos/Cosmos Elite + wireless adapter. Only big differences are price, storefront and Cosmoses "worse" tracking*. But generally your current comparison is between HP Reverb G2 and Facebook Quest 2 and well in short 300-400$+your data vs. 700$, you get a lot better displays and image (yes, Quest 2 still uses the same connectivity as Quest and at least currently there is no promises it getting any better, so for PCVR image even the OG Vive and Rift have better image quality than Quest 2 as PCVR HMD), way more comfortable, better included audio and you loose stand alone capabilities and have wires and "worse" tracking*.

 

* "Worse" is so flexible word. Worse like over-cooked steak vs perfect medium kobe steak or worse like Coca-cola served ice-cold vs. Coca-cola server ice-cold + 1 degree. ARTTracking is spot on 0,001mm misalignment, lighthouses are around 0,1mm misalignment, WMR and Facebook are around 0,3mm misalignment and HTC Cosmos is around 2mm misalignment. By numbers big differences but in reality, majority of software has bigger misalignments than Cosmos has and for real, with the immersion even 1cm misalignment wouldn't be noticeable without you needing to interact with something in real-world,  your hand movements can even be hindered in the game without you really noticing that your own hand can move faster and has better movement.
