Where's the CPU? (dumb question)

Go to solution Solved by WaggishOhio383,

Doesn't look to me like it's visible in this photo. The CPU is typically tucked away under the shell somwhere where it can't be accessed by the panels. If you want to get to the CPU you have to take off the whole outer case of the laptop, which can be a somewhat complicated process.

First, I would like to thank everyone who helped me and gave me the courage to open up my really old (really REALLY old) laptop, which hasn't been opened up in 10 years. There was more dust in there than a whole attic, hope my overheating problems are gone. Now, my question is really dumb, but where's the CPU?

Is it near the CMOS battery? Or underneath the hard drive?

Thanks!

I mostly speak from my own past experience from similar problems. My solution may not work for you, but I'll always try my best to help as much as I can. If you want me to see your reply, make sure to quote my comment or mention me @WaggishOhio383, and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

You haven't actually completely opened the laptop, the CPU is still under the black case.

Thanks! any knowledge of where's the pci e?

A laptop doesn't have a regular pcie slot. It has a mini pcie for the wifi. If this is again for you wanting to do egpu. Again don't The chances of it working over mini pcie is slim at best and it will cost you as much as a used laptop with better specs.

That's in use by your WiFi-card at the top of the picture.

The CPU is still inside the case and looks to be next to the RAM there is something there that looks like a socket. You need to take the caver off to verify

Ugly quote

You know, it's rather bad form to quote the entire post, including the huge picture in it.

No, it's not a CPU-socket. That's unpopulated space, as you can see from the line of solder-pads there.

EDIT: Ah, you mean the two screws near the RAM. Yes, the socket is there, but it's not accessible and neither is the CPU, so my point remains.

So i can unplug it if i use ethernet?

Sure, if you wish. That said, to be able to use it for a GPU, you'd still need:

  1. BIOS that supports that in the first place!
  2. A mPCIe -> PCIe 16x - adapter.
  3. A separate PSU to run the GPU with.
  4. The GPU.

There is no guarantee you have a compatible BIOS, and you still would have to buy the adapter and the PSU.

Yeah I do see that now. Either way you can't access it without taking off the case though.

And that's relevant, how? Like I said already in my first reply to this thread, the CPU is still under the case. Seeing a tiny slice of the socket doesn't change that, the CPU is still not accessible because it's under the case and there's no way of taking it out of the socket without completely removing the bottom of the laptop's case.

That's a socket G1 there, so I made a picture that approximately demonstrates the issue:

1532114035_WhatsAppImage2020-09-13at10_06.08PM(1).jpeg.dd8c39ab6fa3cd2cec6bf3430458bbe2.jpeg.3e271adc9ae5725aaa424c6494287d73.jpeg

You are entirely free to explain how to access that socket without removing the black bottom-cover of the laptop completely.

LOL you are bitter you didn't see the actual CPU socket, you didn't even notice it when i said its near the RAM and you tried correct me even then saying its not there. Stop nagging as an attempt to cover up. The question was "Where's the CPU?" well the answer is: CPU is near the RAM.
