You’d think it would be difficult to sell a smartphone for $1,999, which is what Samsung is asking for the Galaxy Z Fold 2, and almost impossible to sell one for $3,299. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 Thom Browne Edition costs an arm and a leg, but apparently there’s a lot of demand for it in South Korea.

According to local reports, more than 230,000 people have signed up for the draw to purchase the Galaxy Z Fold 2 Thom Browne edition. The supply is severely limited so only a handful of them will actually be able to buy it.

Over 230,000 people in Korea want to buy the most expensive phone from Samsung right now. You have to sign up for the draw to purchase the Galaxy Z Fold 2 like a lottery game. Supply is severely limited so Samsung might jack up the price even more to make more profit. I don't know if one should buy this phone, RTX 3080 or RTX 3090, or multiple Xbox Series X for $300?

Not terribly surprising, it's a special edition and those tend to fly off the shelves pretty quickly. On top of that, the Thom Browne version is, IMO, absolutely beautiful.

It's also worth noting that you don't only get the phone for the price of $3,299. You also get:

  • Galaxy Watch3
  • Galaxy Live Buds
  • Leather case
  • Leather half case
  • Extra standard strap for the watch
  • Extra Thom Browne strap for the watch
  • Leather case cover for the Live Buds
  • Concierge Premier, as well as a one time replacement of the display at no charge

If you factor in the pricing of the other items (not including the screen replacement or Live Buds leather case), then you're only paying $400 more for a limited run, custom device from a high end designer. I'd almost argue that it's a bargain if you were already planning on getting the watch and earbuds anyway, especially since I imagine a screen replacement on a device like this is a pricey affair.

I don't see it being that hard to believe. Samsung has something like 60% market share in SK.

I also do see it as tech news. It's about a tech item. Just because it might not be something you're interested in, doesn't mean it's not news.

Wasn’t Tom brown’s a body amouldering in the ground?  Oh that was John Browne.  NVM.

I can see the one time screen replacement being possibly worthwhile.  Those fold screens don’t have the best rep atm.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

Well, they have a population of almost 52 million people. 230.000 people isn't all that huge number regardless of price. There are always people rich enough to afford such stupendously priced stuff. But not rich enough to top some global rich people charts. I mean, these are the people who drive 60k BMW's and stuff. The "not filthy rich" group that's well situated and can easily spend 3k on a phone without really making a sweat... Can you on a minimal wage? So, there's the answer.

And that is assuming that you don't have duplicated account by scalpers.

Also, any way to confirm that all these 230k people are from South Korea and not outside scalpers? I am thinking that there is people outside of the country registered themselves.
