Steam Caching on Windows.

I attempted to set up this build that they had here (https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/962655-steam-caching-tutorial/) a while ago but never really got it working due to my inexperience with Linux. Any way something like this could be done on Windows?

My PC

CPU: R9-3900x

Ram:32 Gigs 3200mhz

GPU: 3070

Storage:1Tb 970 Evo Boot   3 1 TB HDD in Raid0 (Plus like 10 TB of JBOD) 2 1tb 970 Evo raid 0

PSU: EVGA 750W

You can put a linux vm on windows and run docker in there. Thats probably the easiest way to do it.

Otherwise, there is a lot of manual config to get it working.

Your only option for actually running it in Windows, without a full hypervisor would be Docker (which would virtualise the Linux subsystem).

There is no Windows solution for this though, you'd have to be a pretty adept programmer to make your own to the level of something like LANCache.

Since WSL 2 (Windows-Subsystem for Linux) uses the full kernel it might be able to run Docker in it.

  1. Install WSL and update to WSL2 (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wsl/install-win10)
  2. Use Ubuntu 20.04 as Linux Distribution
  3. Install docker (https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-install-and-use-docker-on-ubuntu-20-04)
    1. Don't use the SNAP version which is mentioned in other tutorials. Just makes it more complicate IMO
  4. Install lancache using the quick start tutorial on https://lancache.net/

I installed my lancache on a linux host and had some issues at first. It was due to ipv6. I disabled it in my windows network card and it worked after that

My ISP runs IPV6 if I disable it on my PC should that fallback to IPV4 or is is going to mess something up

IPv6 and your ISP *should* be related to your WAN connection. Generally on your router you'll have support for dual stack (IPv4 and IPv6) and it should route between the protocols seamlessly.

i tried this too, decided to give up and just backup all my steam games to my NAS, when i need them i just copy them over

if you want something more nice looking you could set up a nextcloud and make sharing links for games as needed. nextcloud seems to be a bit slower than smb3 though
