Android deleting quotes produce "Blockquote Widget" text to appear

Moonzy
Go to solution Solved by colonel_mortis,

That's an issue with chrome-based browsers on Android, and not something that we can control unfortunately.

Browser, version and OS:

Device: Sony Xperia 10 ii (9:21 aspect ratio)

OS: Android 10, Build number 59.0.A.5.2

Browser: Chrome https://www.whatsmybrowser.org/b/G59UP

Steps to reproduce/what were you doing before it happened?

shown in video

What happened?

Backspacing quotes produce "Blockquote Widget" text to appear, and quotes are not disapearing

What did you expect to happen?

quote to disapear

workaround is tapping the trash bin at top left of editor, but that clears everything, including what I typed.

if this is not the right way to delete quote on android, do let me know.

Any other relevant details:

Update:

only English Gboard causes this issue

chinese and japanese gboard does as expected

Gboard version:

Version 9.7.05.323382208-release-arm64-v8a

Either @piratemonkey or quote me when responding to me. I won't see otherwise

I believe it's to do with the keyboard codes that are sent to the browser - most Android browsers send a generic "key pressed" message, which doesn't allow the site to detect if you pressed backspace and act accordingly, but a few do actually send "backspace".

hmm... so the keyboards are sending different codes when you backspace in english? that's kind of strange

but if there's no way around it then i guess case closed

I think it's to do with how they handle autocomplete (what key event do you send for correcting te -> the?) and how they extend that behaviour to the other input events, but yes it is unfortunate.
