NH-D15 enough for slight OC?

lololohahaha008
Go to solution Solved by lololohahaha008,

Ok so you guys have convinced me and I'm making a decision tonight. You already know what it is 😉

(surprise surprise: it's name starts with N and finish with H-D15)

Hi,

I'm currently on an AIO (120mm) with my 5820K at 3.9GHz, and it's kinda fine. CPU is 50C idle and pump is loud. Note that the cooler has been in use for almost 7 year. So, I'm shopping for a new cooler and have end up in a dilemma: water or air? I would like to have good performance to maybe push the CPU to 4GHz (not more), but also want it to be quiet, not silent. (comparing to my loud AIO right now)

I came across the NH-D15 and it was really appealing especially for the price (129$CAD). On the other end, I was looking for something like a NZXT Kraken X53, DEEPCOOL Castle 240EX or Corsair H100x. How would the Noctua compare to those?

TL;DR: Is the NH-D15 enough for OC compared to the AIO realm?

Thx!

NHL.

PS: Forgot to mention, would like to be in a budget of around 150$CAD ± 20$CAD, but preferably under 😅

I'd totally get the D15, kraken has a crap pump and the new corsair AIOs aren't that great tbh. It will be enough for a mild OC

How about DEEPCOOL? I heard that they were comparable to Corsair in performance and cheaper. Is that true? What's your opinion on it?

I’d get the D15 for sure. You can use it until you can’t mount it on anything anymore. I got about 4-5 years out of my clc before it couldn’t handle my overclocked x5690. And it started getting loud a week after I got it lol. I gave it to my brother and he ran it on his stock 7700K for another year and a half before the pump died. He said it was really loud lol.

You just have to make sure you have good case flow to support that D15, or any other high performance cooler.

not sure, I only know the brand because of the cases tbh

I like air coolers because the only thing that could fail on them is the fan that can easily be replaced, AIOs though have multiple failure points but mainly the pump, which can't be replaced (unless you love modding and have spare parts)

plus there isn't much of a difference between both, AIOs rely more on having a constant fresh air intake because of the slim radiators

Also with the air coolers the fans can fail and the CPU will still be fine MOST of the time, especially with the big ones like the NH-D15.

Ok. I'm getting conviced, but partly. 😅

How about noise (talking about NH-D15)? Is it really that quieter for the equivalent performance of an AIO?

Also, let say the Corsair Hydro H100x (which is priced similarly to the NH-D15 at 119.99$CAD) is on sale for 99$CAD, which is 30$ lower than the Noctua (at 129.99$CAD). Would you still pick the Noctua even tho it's 30$ more? Or nah? What are the reason here in this situation?

Thx!

Would you consider the NZXT S340 a case with a good enough air flow?

yes. and it also has the performance of 240mm aios.

240mm aio? NH d 15 will be on par. but air coolers last much longer

The NH-D15 is equivalent to average 280mm CLC AIOs or good 240mms. I'd take it over the AIOs you mentioned any day of the week, unless there was something like a compatibility issue regarding how large the heatsink is. Similar story with the Dark Rock Pro 4, though that one will be a bit quieter when running the fans at 100% speed, while also being a couple degrees behind the D15 performance-wise.

On that note, if you want something that's not quite as bulky but still is very close in terms of performance, consider the NH-U12A. There's no chromax.black variant of it available at the moment though.

Is enough for my CPU with slight OC (max 4GHz)? And yeah unfortunately, brown is not my fav color! 😁 Would a NH-U12S with a 2nd fan be the same?

It should do fine but ultimately it depends on your particular CPU, since they all overclock differently (some require more voltage for a certain clock speed, some less).

The same as the U12A? No, not really, its heatsink is a bit slimmer if I'm not mistaken and it's also a couple heatpipes short.

U12A is a 7 pipe cooler, D15 is 6. I bet that little U12A holds its own.

I've had my D15 for over 5 years. It works great, used it without fans on my old i5 3570. Now it cools my 3600 without issue. I give it two thumbs up.

Fan Speed around 900 rpm is pretty much silent. Under 1200 is very quiet. Even maxed out, the A15 fans are pretty quiet. I run all of my fans at a max of 60% (other than GPU). Max CPU temp while playing RDR2 (most CPU heavy game I play) is 65C at 4.4ghz. Thats with the 5700xt pumping out 230W or so of heat as well. If I do a more sane overclock of 4.3ghz at 1.3V, it stays below well 60C under gaming load.

Should've mentioned but I forgot to - you could get the U12A and a couple NF-F12 chromax.black.swap or iPPC 2000RPM PWM fans, to swap the poop&brown NF-A12x25 fans that come with the cooler, but that will run you quite a bit more money, and if you don't have two 120mm fan spots in your case that aren't out of sight to not bother you, it'd also kind of be a waste of two of the best 120mm fans out there.

Just my 2 cents if it matters...LOL I had a NH-D14 that came off my i7 a few weeks ago...I went and ordered the AM4 bracket kit for it to place it on top of my new 3900X...it's quite adept at handling a 12 core CPU. Going to start overclocking it soon but I know I have the headroom for it.

Or you did a lot of maintenance to prevent that?

I really cant accept the idea of mixing up liquids with electronics, and also looking to buy a NOCTUA for the new computer I am building, using the 10900k.

No, no leaks was spotted and yes I did maintenance every 3-6 months. It has served me well.
