AMD Announces R9 280 GPU

AMD has announced a new graphics card, the Radeon R9 280, based on the same Tahiti GPU as the older Radeon HD 7950. It operates a little faster, though, filling in the high-end R9 line-up.

The board features a total of 1792 stream processors, along with 112 TMUs and 32 ROPs. The GPU is now clocked at a frequency of up to 933 MHz.

Memory aboard the card remains set at 3 GB, and still runs over a 384-bit memory interface at an effective speed of 5.0 GT/s.

The R9 280's power needs are satisfied through a PCI Express x16 slot, along with eight- and six-pin auxiliary connectors. Despite the trimmed-back performance, this board bears the same 250 W TDP as the higher-end R9 280X. Cooling is taken care of by the same reference cooler as found on reference R9 280X cards, though we'll probably be seeing more cards with custom cooling solutions since AMD's solution is derided for being noisy.

Support is present for AMD's Mantle API, as well as DirectX 11.2 and OpenGL 4.3.

The card is set to come to shelves over the coming weeks with an MSRP price of $279. It remains to be seen whether AMD will be able to satisfy demand or hit its estimated price target. Both have been a problem for the company in recent months, and Radeon R9 270X cards are selling in the same range already.

I don't understand, is there any real point in this card? It's a trimmed back R9 280X that will definitely not sell for $279. It will be high into the $400s.

It'll boost up the pricing super fast, and won't be bought IMO...

It seems a tad like them just wanting to keep their names in the pot.

I don't think there's a point.

Won't this mining stuff hurt AMD in the long run since it won't sell for 279 which is a awesome price

Why would it hurt them? I mean, the prices go up because they can't produce enough cards and are selling every one that is been manufactured. In other words, unless they have very serious manufacturing problems, they should be selling a lot of cards and making tons of money.

Correct. They aren't reaping the rewards. They are bending over while Newegg and the other e-tailers go to town and take advantage of them.

The vendors are getting most of the pumped profit (the raised prices), but AMD is still getting $$$ for every GPU sold, albeit not as much as the vendors.

They are selling more cards. Therefore, they are making more money. But it's not them that's making the real money.

So a 7950 then.

People get anally frustrated when AMD rebrands cards but nobody bats an eye when Nvidia rebrands their Kepler cards.

Yeah, but NVIDIA only rebranded two cards for 700 series.

How many did AMD rebrand? More than six.

I don't care. I don't mind as long as the price is the same or less than the old card.

280$ msrp, this is crazy. You could get 7950 for as low as 200 bucks, it was 760 competitor and similar price.

now nvidia has no reason to drop prices on any card. great -_-

especially since it will sell for alot more

That was the past a HIS 7950 back in late 2013 was selling for 214$ newegg far cheaper & beat the GTX 760 which cost 249.99 but now thanks to coin miners its gone way up in price this is gonna hurt them when those old cards flood the used market when they try to release new stock of cards they won't sell when you can get the old stock for far cheaper

mining is insane. :D A Gigabyte R9 280X costs 250€ (344 USD) in germany. The 280 non-x wil probably start at about 220€ and drop down under 200 with maxwell release.

who cares...

Until this whole mining thing doesn't abates, I'm not even remotely interested in AMD cards. :/

It's a shame really.

Let's just hope, that the whole mining thing doesn't catch on too much here in Germany, otherwise we'll be shortly looking at these kinds of prices (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125490)

The more I think back on it, the more I wish I picked the 280X over the 770 when it was first released.

I could have resold it and bought a 780 Ti instead.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.
